US Sailing Disabled Championships

ILYA connections still on top
John Ruf won the US Sailing Disabled Champs for the first time. While he has a bronze in the Olympics and has won the 2.4R Worlds, this title has escaped him until now. Photos from US Sailing site.
John is shown here with his father. Fritz Ruf and Bill Goggins of Harken.
Sarah Everhart-Skeels also won the event in the doublehanded class. She is pictured with crew Jerry Tiernan, Bill Goggins and her husband. The crew sailed in an Ideel 18 which was modified with a swivel seat for the skipper. Disabled sailing categorizes sailors with a ranking system for a disability. The two ranking numbers are added to evenly match the abilities of the teams. In this event, an able-bodied third crew was added to the front of the boat to provide ballast. Sarah's husband served as her third. JP Porter was added to a boat on Sunday due to fatigue on the part of one of the Ideel teams.

Oshkosh in '14; ILYA Champs Extravaganza
The  Waters for lunch and evening parties. What could be better? To view the races from atop that magnificent building or from the waterfront will be spectacular as all our fleets join together at one event.
The scheduling of the day's water use will fall to Tom Hodgson who will be the coordinator to assure equal use of the day. The plan is to develop a schedule to allow sailors to enjoy sailing as they like. The young, energetic crowd can sail morning and afternoon in two fleets. The folks who want more family or rest time can select one fleet. If you can work remotely, you will have time to sail and work - but who would want to work with the massive water available to spectate and enjoy your fellow sailors?
Oshkosh is planning concierge service to best allow you to enjoy the area. How many of us have ever walked the river walk? Or enjoyed the many boutiques or charming restaurants of the area? Have your small children or grandchildren visited the zoo? Or the Payne Art Museum? Shopping at the newly-remodeled mall area? The downtown riverfront hotel is open. Plan to bring your spectator boat and enjoy the many waterfront restaurants on Lake Winnebago.
Spectator boats will be available to watch your family sail or to watch the alternate fleet on race days. Race committee is already planning the best use of the personnel and equipment. It is a challenge we will all enjoy to bring you the best regatta with all of us there together.
The MC fleet will be discussing participation at this event. Oshkosh is full of protected areas but who could miss the social aspect of this extravaganza? If you are not sailing, you are still welcome to come and enjoy the Inland experience. No one does social like Oshkosh!
