Mike Keefe Wins Melges 24 Fall Regatta
Chris Banholzer, Mac Six, Kevin Jewett, Mike Keefe
Mike Keefe takes the 2013 Melges 24 Fall Championship.  Five races were completed Saturday having some short races, long races, and a breeze as different as the race courses.  Sunday was less eventful with no races taking place.  It was a great tune-up fro the Worlds coming up in San Francisco and fun was had by all.

Editor's review of the results - champion Mike Keefe has been on the brink of attaining the top of the fleet for several years. It has been a pleasure to watch him on the A scow race course leading races; this ILYA Champs to be in the hunt from start to finish. A fantastic year for Geneva's Mike Keefe. The other outstanding accomplishment is Rich Morris with a midfleet race at this event. He has crewed for this season, supported his children sailing for many years and, voila, we have a helmsman. Congrats, in particular, for this leap!!!
Roble Helms for Top Matchracing Title

Sheboygan - go watch this weekend

If you have not taken the opportunity to visit the Sheboygan Matchracing Center, here is a lovely weekend for a casual ride up Lake Michigan. The center is self-contained for any matchracing event. The view from the club or the higher northern shore is relaxing. When the southern water is used, a comfortable park provides great viewing - take your binoculars. This is a treasure for sailors in our area. The area around the Sheboygan YC features several nautical stores, restaurants and a huge hotel complex for fun. Go watch Roble and Haeger compete with Dave Perry and Dave Dellenbaugh. It will be an event with top names.

Two U.S. Match Racing icons and the #1 ranked match racer in the world will go head-to-head this week at the U.S. Match Racing Championship, hosted by Sail Sheboygan (Wis.). Eight teams will match race for the Prince of Wales Bowl in Sonars on Lake Michigan, beginning Thursday, September 19 through Sunday, September 22.

Taylor Canfield (Chicago, Ill.) enters this week's week event as the #1 ranked match racer in the world by ISAF. After losing in the finals of the U.S. Match Racing Championship in 2011 and 2012, Canfield captured his first Prince of Wales Bowl last year in Marblehead, Mass. Canfield will switch roles on the boat for this year's event and crew for Stephanie Roble (East Troy, Wis.), who crewed for Canfield at last year's championship. Roble is the top ranked women's match racer in the U.S. Earlier this summer, Roble won the Stena Match Race Sweden event, a stop on the new Women's International Match Racing Tour. Brian Janney (Holland, Mich.) and Anne Haeger (East Troy, Wis.) will be sailing with Roble and Canfield for the first time, collectively. Janney sails with Canfield on the USOne Sailing Team. Roble's team will represent the Lake Beulah Yacht Club and Chicago Match Race Center.

Remaining at number one for the U.S. women, and moving up to number six in the World, is Wisconsin native Stephanie Roble (East Troy, WI) and her Epic Team Racing.

Returning to compete in his 12th U.S. Match Racing Championship is Dave Perry (Southport, Conn.), a four-time winner of the Prince of Wales Bowl. Perry and crewmates Mike Rehe (Harper Woods, Mich.) and Chris Museler (Portsmouth, R.I.) won the title two years ago off the coast of Newport Beach, Calif. Museler also won this championship with Perry in 2008 (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) and 2006 (Fort Worth, Texas). Perry is the fifth ranked match racer in the country. The two-time Congressional Cup Champion will be representing the Pequot Yacht Club (PYC) again this year. Perry won this championship on three occasions while representing PYC in 2011, 2008 and 2006, and once for the Yale Corinthian Yacht Club in 1982.

Two-time U.S. Match Racing Champion Dave Dellenbaugh (Easton, Conn.) has returned to take another shot at the title. Dellenbaugh, who won this championship in 2002 and 1984, is also representing the Pequot Yacht Club. He'll be sailing this week with his daughter Rebecca Dellenbaugh, a 2010 ICSA All-American at Dartmouth (Easton, Conn.), Janel Zarkowsky (Annapolis, Md.), who won the championship last year as crew for Canfield, and accomplished team racer Amanda Callahan (Portsmouth, R.I.).

David Storrs (Southport, Conn.), the fifth ranked match racer in the U.S., will be sailing this week with Maggie Shea (Wilmette, Ill.), who won as crew for Canfield last year and with Genny Tulloch at the 2012 U.S. Women's Match Racing Championship. Storrs will represent the Chicago Match Race Center.

Long Beach Yacht Club's (Calif.) Dustin Durant will be crewing for helmsman Scott Dickson this week, along with Steve Flam. Durant is the second ranked match racer in the country and the skipper of the Long Beach Match Racing Team.

The winning skipper of this event will receive an invitation to race at the 2014 Ficker Cup, a grade 3 event and a Congressional Cup Qualifier.

Still Time to Come - This Weekend
   Thirty-Three Boats Verbally Committed
  • We have sponsors which means a good time!
  • We have a small lake which means shifty challenges - anyone can win. There is some luck involved.
  • We have Andrew Bohl as regatta chair (well, ok, he has his mom and aunt working)
  • We have Kent Haeger who is as tough a competitor as you will want to see.
  • We have thirty homelake boats - not all are coming, obviously; some are in college, some wives have said, "enough!" It's just a great group of sailors
  • We have sailors cooking the Sat night meal. That gives you even more reason to talk smack.
  • We have Ben Porter and Brad Roble on bar. That means shotskis.
  • We have Craig Parker coming and he hopes to convince you all to come to Cedar, IN for the 2014 C Invite.

Just show up Friday night or Saturday morning. The weather is warm again. It's a great time.

Lake Lotawana and Polar Bear- September 28-29

The Lake Lotawana C-Fleet will hold their traditional Fall Regatta the weekend of September 27-28-29.  Registration and a tune up race are scheduled for Friday, along with the regular  BBQ pot luck and party on the patio at the MoYC.  We will shoot for three races on Saturday and two on Sunday if conditions and time permit.  There will be a dinner at the MoYC on Saturday night and a brunch on Sunday after racing where trophies will be presented.

We generally have nice weather and winds this time of year at Lotawana, and boat traffic should be light post Labor Day.

We look forward to seeing you on the line the last weekend of September!

Want to sail on the Mississippi? For years the Lake Davenport members have welcomed us along with the barges for great Fall sailing. For some folks this is a not-to-be-missed event. Come join them.

And Delavan for the Last C Event of the Season
October 6-7
