Will Haeger and Tufts Team Win College Matchracing Nationals Event

Fort Worth (November 18, 2012) - Ten teams competed in the 2012 Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association Match Race National Championship (Nov.

16-18), hosted by Fort Worth Boat Club on Eagle Mountain Lake.

Wind conditions on Friday varied from calm to light, allowing the completion of only 6 of the 9 round robin races on the opening day. Saturday proved to be a little more cooperative and the final three races of the round robin were completed, advancing the top eight teams to the quarterfinals. The best of five quarterfinals were completed with St. Mary's College, Tufts, Georgetown and Yale moving on to the semifinals.

The winds on Sunday picked up to the 10 to 20 mph range for the best of five semifinals. Tufts, skippered by Will Haeger, was the first to advance to the finals with three straight wins over Georgetown. Yale, skippered by Chris Segerblom, prevailed over St. Mary's in the fourth race of their series to make it an all New England final. Because of limited time, the finals were now reduced to a best of three series.

Yale won the first race and Tufts won the second to set up the decisive third race. Tufts started from the starboard end a little late, allowing Yale to escape over them and the race committee to the right side of the starting area. After several dial ups and circling, Tufts led Yale back to the start, forcing Yale to start behind them. Tufts tacked over Yale multiple times during the first windward leg to stretch their lead to three boat lengths, which they opened further to the finish to take the title.

The winning Tufts team was Will Haeger, David Liebenberg, Paula Grasberger, and Solomon Krevans.

The Petit Finals was an all San Diego Yacht Club final, with Georgetown's Nevin Snow beating St. Mary's Jake LaDow to take third place. Results:

Here's the Latest for Sailors on Black Friday

Petey Crawford has a recommendation for all you video wannabees or experts. Petey does not work for this company; just loves the product. He certainly has experience with lots of video equipment. Perhaps you remember him in the water at a windward mark on the A course at Minnetonka ILYA Champs. Here's a Christmas idea for your young or old sailor, complete with discount codes for your online shopping. Here's Petey:

"I thought I would drop you a line to introduce you and hopefully the ILYA base to what is in my opinion the best sailing camera on the market. I have been using these cameras for over a year with great results, and the new camera (THE GHOST) that just came out far exceeds the capabilities of the ones that I already love.

"Most people by now have used or seen a Gopro or seen Gopro footage. I think the Gopros are a little less user friendly with difficult menus and also need a waterproof case to use on a sailboat. The Drift is so much easier to navigate and is waterproof to 3 meters right out of the box. No case means you have a better chance of getting some decent audio as well. It's also loaded with many other options, modes and accessories that help to make it a better product. Not going to go technical on you :)

"Anyway, with Christmas around the corner I figured I would let you know about this so maybe interested scow sailors could get their hands on one or get one for the kiddos. Here is the website to see the camera, see what it can do, and what it comes with.http://driftinnovation.com/

Scows to be featured at US Sailing One Design Event
US Sailing Invites us to promote our fleets -

In January a group of Inland sailors will travel to Ohio for the US Sailing One Design Symposium. One of the many presentations will be the Success of Scows. Your editor will assist with compiling the information to be presented. A visual presentation will run in the background during the presentation. We need great, short video of our magnificent boats in action or breathtaking photos from all our classes. The theme of the presentation will be family - our strong family of sailors, our sleek, well-built family of scows and our strong family of clubs who support scow sailing. If you have information to add - especially the Western Michigan area and MC scow country in the SE of the country, send all info to the editor, candaceporter@wi.rr.com.

In particular, if you have short bios on our most talented, decorated sailors we will feature those sailors who have enriched our scow history on the water.

Consider joining us in Ohio. There is always information that includes fleet-building, RC and rules presentations. This is a who's who of fleet leaders from around the nation.

Big Inland - 2013

Okoboji Inland Sailing - The dates for the 2013 Inland Championship Regatta are set.

Class C Th - Fr - Sa August 8 - 10 - Registration August 7

Class A Su - Mo - Tu August 11 - 13 - Registration August 10

Class E/MC Th - Fr - Sa August 15 - 17 - Registration August 14

Okoboji is a resort area so early reservations are advised. There is a wide variety of resorts and motels in the Okoboji area - see housing list

Private housing will be provided were possible - contact Stuart Gerhold stuartg31@gmail.com

Amusement Park - Wonder what the family will do while you are sailing at the Okoboji Inland Championship Regatta? Keep them happy at the lakeside Amusement Park with a day pass to the rides, attractions, and shopping. Be careful - they might enjoy the Okoboji visit more than you do. Checkout website www.arnoldspark.com     www.activeokoboji.org

Lakeside Dining - What would resort area would be complete without fine restaurants to feed your palate? The Okoboji area boats 14 lakeside restaurants with famous names like: Dry Dock, Kazarelli's, Maxwell's, Minervas, and the Wharf.

Championship Sailing - What makes championship sailors? Going to regattas helps. Okoboji has created several Inland Champions: Jerry Huse (4 times), Boober Schneider (3 times) and the 2012 MC Inland Champion Steve Everist. What is it about Okoboji winds that creates great sailors? There must be something in the water.

MC Fleet - The Okoboji Yacht Club has 31 registered MC boats. It is also the home of the current MC Inland Regatta Champion. Come to Okoboji in August to find out what makes Okoboji a great MC sailing lake. Come to Okoboji to unseat the current MC Inland Champion.
Editor's note: If you have not traveled to one of our most distant Midwest clubs, this is a not-to-be-missed experience. The clubhouse is situated on the lake with great after-the-race seating to enjoy your friends. Okoboji has the most generous spirit and a walk-up outside bar to boot. It is the most relaxing spot for afternoon and early evening camaraderie. I come home each time wondering how can we create this same atmosphere at home. The venue and tourist town invite women to shop, exceptional lakeside dining, and a true sense of vacation. And NO ONE beats Beulah at the Go-Karts. Now we have had a few run-ins with the "Go-Kart Law" - those stories go on for years but it is just simply a chance to make memories with your family while enjoying great water.
