What a party!
150 bid adieu to Jim Smith

It's hard to see the "golden anchor" but Lake Geneva presented Jim with this award to mark his retirement from the ILYA position of Executive Secretary. Geneva, of course, hopes to see more of him on the waters at home but the ILYA hopes to see him as windward markset boat at its events. Smith was roasted and toasted to a marvelous evening of farewell. Surprise guest, his daughter Morgan Domingue, is featured under the buoy in the forefront.
Dave Perrigo ably served as our Master of Ceremonies interjecting humor, respect and, most importantly, keeping us in order. His dedication to our pre-event preparation was unparalleled. The perfect man for the job led us through a program of speakers and a pictorial review of the life of Jim Smith.

Friends from his youth, Tom "Bull" Schmidt and Peter Hollister recalled the early years. Seems they were a little confused about who was being honored since they began speaking of John Smith and Pocahontas, then realized Bull was so much older than Jim he hardly knew him.

It seems past commodore Bob Sevey still is unsure how "Magic" got elected some 37 years ago but he still has a bedroom and Diet Pepsi in Sevey's home after all these years.

Just when you thought the presenters were going to get serious about his service to the organization, two imposters (Beulah's Francie and Julie Davenport) came to express their affection for the man in his "khaki and white". Singing and dancing to a rendition of Whatta Man, Smith turned out to know how to dance. - Oops, watch out, Jim!

Longtime friend Bob Harring who spent years with "Smythe" finally got some serious words in  - interspersed with some tall tales. A truer friend could not be found in Harring's eyes.

Past Commodore Jeff Baker convinced Smith to move out of his comfort zone. Commodore Harvey Mills granted Smith a five-week reprieve, and off Baker and Smith went with Past Commodore Lou Morgan on a cruise with  a little alcohol, a lot of sailing, an attempt at skiing and fun for a lifetime. Baker and Smith remain closest of friends evident by Baker's heartfelt words.
And just when Jim thought the party was winding down, Dick Barkow and Todd Haines stepped up to serenade the evening's hero.
Perhaps the words will appear later but a version of "God Bless our Jimmy Smith" and "Glory, Glory Hallelujah, Sailing sure has been good to ya" displayed unknown talent (?). The evening was accompanied by a Lake Country brass ensemble donated by Barkow -   Todd Wenzel, Sterling and Brass. This was not just your ordinary affair.

Chip Mann welcomed Jim to ILYA RC work with a quick lesson in the flags. The Bilge Pullers have already presented Jim with the beginnings of a full RC complement of instruments for his future with the Inland.
Finally, Past Commodore Tom Hodgson held the room in appreciative reverence for the work, vision and leadership Jim Smith has brought to the Inland Lake Yachting Association - declaring Jim a best friend.

Present Commodore Steve Schmidt led the audience in a toast to the Jim Smith after reading a letter from Okoboji YC which says it all better than any of us individually could express:
"They say that on the occasion of a retirement of a great man it is customary that a token of appreciation be given. But how do you encapsulate, into a token, the career of a man who has guided the lnland Lakes Yachting Association through the changes and challenges of 37 years with the acuity of a sage and the grace of a gentleman?
Thus with acknowledgment of the inadequacy of a mere token - but with the fullest esteem and respect for Jim Smith upon his retirement - our expression of appreciation and admiration is documented with this special burgee of the Okoboji Yacht Club. Okoboji is most grateful for Jim's abiding support - not only to all the ILYA clubs - but particularly to Okoboji. Jim was always available to our club providing sound advice and counsel based on his long ILYA experience.
This Okoboji Yacht Club burgee is inscribed by four lnland Regatta Champions who since 1960 have proudly advanced the burgee for Okoboji: Mike Flannigan, Jerry Huse, Bob "Boober" Schneider, and Steve Everist. They are joined by the 500 members of the Okoboji Yacht Club in recognizing Jim Smith for his contribution to the ILYA and the sport of sailing. lt is fitting that this token is inscribed by winners, for Jim was and is a winner. Finally, this burgee is dusted with the hails and accolades of generations of ILYA sailors and compatriots, "Congratulations, Jim! Godspeed! Well done!"

The ILYA presented Smith with a magnificent glass momento which will be displayed in a later edition of Scowlines, although it is partially visible in the Barkow/Haines photo.

Smith was visibly moved by the evening, expressed his gratitude for the years to develop such friendships as he served an organization he loved.

Goodbye, Jim Smith, to an honest, hardworking, fine, fine gentle man we all had the honor to know and love.
