Wisconsin State 420 Champs

 Bilge Pullers

Submitted by Karen Trepton

With a world class cityscape, clear sunny skies, and steady wind as the backdrop for the day, Wisconsin held it's first ever State High School Sailing Champs at Milwaukee Yacht Club this past Saturday.  21 sailors from 5 schools participated in the 420 event.  Once the sailors were launched at MYC, they sailed to Discovery World, where the courses were set for the day, giving a wonderful venue for sailors and spectators alike. The historic Denis Sullivan sailed outside the race course throughout the day, and docked next to the 420's during lunch, presenting a unique blend of old and new in the sailing world.

Light breeze caused a delayed start, however, by 11 am, the wind picked up from the SE and presented a steady 18-20 knots that continued and built throughout the day. The sailors all were very competitive, and the races ran without incident or protests.

A complete rotation was finished by 4pm. Oconmowoc High School Gold consisting of Parker Trepton, Roger Raguse, Margaret Finco, Dan Groskopf and Zac Aasen, finished on top, beating out Arrowhead A by one point.

Parker Trepton, OHS Gold started with a mishap, but recovered to take the lead with 6 out of 10 race wins on the A side.   The surprise of the day was Arrowhead's Charlie Hollister, who switched from his usual position as crew,  to skip the Arrowhead 1, B side boat, with crew Evan Sandefur. He wone 8 out of 10 races and first place on the B Side.

Overall Team and Finishes are as follows:

Wisconsin High School State Sailing Champions:

OHS Gold: A. Skipper Parker Trepton, Crew:Roger Raguse, Margaret Finco, B. Skipper Dan Groskopf, Crew Zac Aasen

BC Girls Ready for Nationals

Rick Roy sent this photo from Boston College's Sailing Banquet. What proud Inland parents as our youth gain in numbers at the ICSA College Nationals year after year. Pictured here are Steph Hudson, Annie Haeger and Kelly Roy. Women start sailing Wednesday, May 30th and will be followed by the two other nationals: team racing and co-ed dinghy racing. Watch the regattas through live streaming or singup for twitter or email blasts. Click here for the official site. Watch as Will Haeger, Annie Haeger, Colin Smith, Joe Kutschenreuter, George Kutschenreuter, Andrew Fox, Brendon Boylan, Michael Lee, Connor Trepton, Katrina Debbink, Molly Sitter, girls above, the White Bear Thompson boys, Bridget Murphy, Christopher Banholzer, Michael Lee, Molly Forbes - . . .  and those who may have been forgotten. But as you can see, our youth sailors are breaking through in terms of numbers. Annie Haeger has brought us new prowess as she will be vying for her fourth year of All-American status. Good luck to all our collegians who compete May 30- June 8th.

Lake Lotawana Hosts Opti Event

 Kansas City Junior Sailing Championships

Submitted by Gordon McBride

We are hosting the Kansas City Junior Sailing Championships here at Lake Lotawana June 25 and 26.  This will include an Optimist fleet that will probably include skippers that would compete in the less skilled class that you all sail Optis in,   This would be a good event for a sailor who wants to get in a bunch of races on a great lake like ours.  We had 15 Optis the last time we did this and I am hoping for many more this time.  contact:
