Our '16 Olympic hopefuls this week
Erik Bowers by Mark Bowers

I am writing today to invite all of you to the June 8th Bowers Sailing Olympic Campaign Party at the Minnetonka Yacht Club starting at 5pm.

Please join us on the Road to Rio 2016! Fine wine from Excelsior Vintage, great beer from the Excelsior Brewing Company, good food, music, and sailing gibberish will all be on the menu 'cause it takes a village to raise a Gold medalist! See attached PDF for more details.

I will followup with final pricing and RSVP requests on May 21st. Thanks again to all of you who have supported Erik in his Olympic Gold Medal quest for the 2016 Rio games.

Best,

Mark Bowers

Stephanie Roble/Maggie Shea/Meg Six - Epic Racing team takes bronze in Class One Event
epic racing  ILYA Foundation account member Stephanie Roble (Beulah) along with Chicago and White Lake sailor Maggie Shea and Lake Geneva sailor Meg Six traveled along with non-ILYA member Janel Zarkowsky to St. Quay, France to participate in the first Women's International Match Racing Series event of the season. The sole American team took home the bronze medal. She was beaten by the team from Great Britain and France. "We made some weak prestarts, in which we lost the game in the last 20 seconds before the signal. Then we fought hard but were not able to get it back, Roble sighs, not too disappointed after winning the petit final against Zuiderbaan with a 2 - 0 record. Our boathandling was superior and my crew did an awesome job. Everything was perfectly executed and we managed to keep calm in the tricky conditions,"  Roble says. Roble, ranked fourth in the world, is showing herself to be a real contender. Roble and Shea will not attend all the events this year primarily due to financial constraints. Consider a donation to her account with the ILYA.

Gordon Lamphere
Lake Geneva's Lamphere is currently in  Medemblik, Netherlands, at the annual Delta Lloyd regatta. He currently sits 2nd American and 14th overall in this prestigious event. He remains in Europe after the event.

Annie Haeger
Also attending the Delta Lloyd event is the 470 team of Annie Haeger (Beulah) and Briana Provancha - who sit in the bronze position after one day of racing. They are adjusting to a new boat at this event. Their 2-5-2 is impressive. Wake up and check the results of Lamphere and Haeger here. Haeger and Provancha also have an ILYA account with the Foundation. In addition they have recently begun selling Tech shirts as a fundraiser. Contact Team HP on Facebook to order your goods.
COLLEGE NATIONALS - Florida site
Starts today
Women's racing begins today. The semifinals will determine the final participants who begin competing in the finals at noon tomorrow. USF hosts the ten-day, three-regatta event. Women's competition is followed by Team Racing and then Co-eds. To watch the live coverage, click here. While rosters change, the following sailors may be competing in the women's event: Emily Oltrogge (Clear Lake - Minnesota), Kaye Siemers (Wayzata - Eckerd), Leslie Poole (Delavan - Wisconsin), Stephanie Hudson (Beulah - Boston College), Kelly Roy (Pewaukee - Boston College). Team racing begins May 25th and Co-eds May 28th. Look for Colin Smith (Beulah - Brown) and George Kutschenreuter (Beulah - Wisconsin), Erin Monahan (Nagawicka - Wisconsin), Katrina Debbink (LaBelle - Wisconsin), Kirstin Reeser (Oshkosh - Wisconsin) in Team racing and Co-eds. Add Will Haeger (Beulah - Tufts), Christopher Banholzer (Beaver -College of Charleston), Nicholas Clemence (Pewaukee - St. Mary's) and perhaps Kelly Roy again to Co-eds. We should all be proud of how we are keeping our youth sailing. If we are missing your sailor, go to the college sailing website and follow the livestreaming or results.

C Nationals
Registration includes all meals - and some free beer
Click here to register for C Nationals on Pewaukee. Twenty-two entrants are listed and 11 are from guess where? Does it get any more fun than Pewaukee. Their new grill area makes all the meals fantastic. The hospitality cannot be beaten! Sign up to assist with planning. Youth discount is always a norm.
Sailing School Safety and Instruction
Consider a review of your safety procedures
It's as simple as your instructors knowing where to call for an emergency. Are the radios functioning? Do your instructors take cell phones on the water? Have your instructors practiced man overboard? The safety report linked here describes three methods of rescue. The weight of the sailor, design of the rescue boat or strength of the instructor may alter the first approach to a safe rescue. Do your instructors or your RC carry knives on board and do you know where they are for ready use? Where is your rescue team going to meet you as you bring an injured sailor to shore --- all are good questions as we commence with our summer of instruction. Remember all your instructors may not be from your lake. Local knowledge is not always obvious to them. We print this report each year but it serves as a reminder to look over your equipment, your policies and your students to assure safe operation of your school.

Need US Sailing certification? The Pewaukee course is full but MN and Michigan offer some alternatives. Traveling to attend a course is not a disadvantage. Learning from other sailing schools can stimulate good discussion. Check the US Sailing Training Small Boat Instructor course calendar for availability. Level 2 June 1-2 has 12 spots available today. Level 1 June 3-6 in Ohio has three spots open. Level 2 June 3-4 south of Detroit in LaSalle, MI has 11 spots open. Level 1 in St. Joseph's, MI has 2 spots open June 5-8. Registration must be made on the US Sailing website.

Delavan Hosts Two ILYA Events

ILYA 420 Champs

Register your high school sailor NOW for the 420 clinic preceding the 420 Champs. Colin Smith of Brown University will teach a Thursday - Friday clinic and regatta sailing commences Friday at noon. Smith will remain onsite through Sunday to coach your sailing team on the water during the regatta. Colin won the WYA X before moving into Lasers where he finished 1st in US Sailing Laser Youth Champs, won the Laser Radial North Americans, won the Trux regatta in college and is an All-American Academic sailor. He is competing this week in ISSA Nationals. Of note, is Smith's exceptional teaching skills. This, above all, in the editor's opinion is one of his strongest assets. Colin will continue onto graduate school and has won a Lightning Class grant which entitles him to use of a class Lightning for the 2013 season.

Delavan is pulling out all the stops.

·       Fish Fry and around the fire pit after Friday's racing

·       BBQ on Sat after racing - volleyball and casual fun

·       Loads of short races

·       Trophies for each day's best sailing team

·       Cool 420 Tech shirt - price to be determined after donations come in - Richard, do we have the logo we can use as artwork to give the article some pizazz?

·       JUST PLAIN FUN - you asked for it.

The pricing for extras will be based on donations from generous supporters of youth sailing. As more donations come in, the price of softgoods and the food packages will be subsidized. Please consider contacting Richard Beers to support your youth sailors. Note - all sailors are welcome; ILYA members and non-members. The ILYA Promotion Committee is subsidizing the entry fee to encourage participation by all youth sailors. We hope this will show the ILYA in a light that encourages our Midwest sailors to enjoy scow sailing as an adult.

MC Invitational - July 11-14

It has been a slow start to summer, but it is finally here.  The Delavan Lake Yacht Club is also ready to bring you the ILYA MC Invitational with registration on July 11th and the last race about noon on the 14th.  For those of you that have never been to Delavan Lake, the yacht club sits in Cedar Point which forms a narrows, evenly dividing the lake into 2 sections.  Either of these sections offers races of a mile or more to the windward pin, or could involve Cedar Point for a different challenge.  In many ways we are very lucky to have Geneva Lake nearby because it attracts the big power boats and Delavan Lake has the fisherman, which makes for great scow conditions.  The lake level is back up and July usually has great wind for MCs.  We are offering a Fish Fry with the DLYC members on Friday night for those interested.  Come over and see for yourself why some regatta chairmen say it is hard to get Delavan Sailors to their regattas.  Please notice there is also a price incentive being offered for youth sailors.
