Our Women Champions Ready for Sail Strong, Sail Pink

Annie Haeger

The Women's 470 Team of Haeger/Provancha were nominated as USOC Team of the Month. This is hot of the trail of the last big European ISAF event of the Spring. After a week's respite home and a US Sailiing promotional event in Boston, Haeger has returned to Spain to train hard. She will return to Beulah for the Girls and Women's to coach X Boats (she is a past ILYA X Champ). Annie is a collegiate All-American from Boston College.

Steph Roble

Steph will come to the Clinic from Cork, Ireland and the Women's Matchracing Circuit. She hurries back to teach Opti sailors. Steph won the prestigious Orange Bowl when a young tyke. She is currently ranked #5 in the world in Women's Matchracing after an eight-month hiatus from that discipline. Steph has been active nearly every week during the winter in Etchells, Melges 20s - you name it!

Sally Barkow

Sally has left from Newport for the return trip to Spain on the magnificent Team SCA Volvo boat. Hopefully many of you have been following their busy week in Newport with speeches, appearances and some fun. Sally will be with us in spirit via videos from her new endeavor.

So who should come? ---- Opti sailors with regatta experience, X Boaters who are ready to learn strategy and well as aggressive boat handling in preparation for HS sailing; potential or current C sailors of all ages (bring your crew or one of our instructors will be your skipper or your crew), MC potential sailors - we provide the boats and crew or skipper.

Click here to register. Please register this week as we are ordering the signature pink tech shirts.

Help Mendota
Pictures Needed
Many of us have memories of sailing from or staying in the Edgewater. A remodeled Edgewater awaits your next regatta there. But, hurry! The Edgewater is putting finishing touches on an historical photographic review of sailing on beautiful Lake Mendota. Please forward digital or copies of photos to Trey Sprinkman by Wednesday. If you have photos of Mendota's sailors elsewhere, photos of the past regattas hosted on this picturesque lake, please send them ASAP.
Cedar, Wis. C and MC

Here were the stars this weekend - not the winners - but those "feel-good" moments of the event. To the left is Fritz Simon who sailed with his dad, Greg, and skipped 6-7 of the eight races. He was named the Saturday night leader in the MC fleet. John and Christine Porter were the Sat. C leaders. Back to Fritz - all of 10 years of age, he handled the boat exceedingly well with great work in the front of the boat. Fritz and Greg ended up second overall.
On the right is new MC sailor Karen Schmidt who just happened to have two brothers, one husband (should a sailing wife have more?) and two children on the C course. Karen purchased the MC for this season and won one of the races to the cheers of the Cedar Schmidt-Eckert clan. You could hear the accolades across the water. With the downwind finish, she remarked how nervous she was as the fleet was coming down on her from behind. Congrats to the stars.
Now to the winners:

Jim Gluek with Mark Isabel (Pewaukee) took top honors in the 18-boat C fleet. Stefan Schmidt from Mendota grabbed the first place trophy from fellow Mendota sailors, the Simons.

This event was promoted by Paul Reillly who with his wife feted us all with a grand party on Friday night after a Melges/North Sails Clinic. The clinic unfortunately ended up being land only due to high winds, cold, cold temps on land and water.

Andy Burdick led the clinic and discussed the features of the new C boat, talked trim and adjustments. Folks of all ages participated as evidenced by the young Ella Muller (Anne Muller is mom) on the bow. Buddy Melges along with Andy observed Saturday's racing and held an afternoon debrief with video at the bar. A great event all around.

Wisconsin MC Championships
Be Part of the New Tradition -

Be part of the newest regional MC Championship regatta. All MC sailors whose home lake is in Wisconsin are invited. Cedar Lake will be hosting this inaugural event on June 28th and 29th. This will be a five-race regatta over two days. On Cedar the race courses are always close to the club. This will be a great next step to those sailors who are not used to traveling. We promise to make it easy and fun. You are welcome to dry-sail your boat. We will have plenty of help to get you launched in the morning and back out after racing. Since there are no X regattas we will have a generous list of available crews.

Larry Krause will be our PRO with an ILYA all-star crew to insure the best race courses. Socially we will have free Capitol Beer throughout the event. Friday evening registration with munchies - Restaurant recommendations for dinner will be offered. Join your MC friends or meet new ones on Friday night in West Bend. Saturday morning registration is expected so come early - Three races during the day - After racing cocktail and appetizer party. Sunday two back to back races followed by lunch and trophies. One fee includes everything.

Trophies to top five - top two masters - top grandmaster - top youth

Since this is a first year event please ask your home club for average points or extra throw-outs to make your attendance easy.

There are new RC volunteers in the ILYA
Both Okoboji and Delavan hosted race committee training seminars this month. John Strassman of Milwaukee Yacht Club led both sessions. This is in addition to a judges seminar held in Pewaukee also in the past month.
US Sailing has run educational programs in sailing school instruction, power boat instructions, race committee and judging for many years and throughout the nation.
While RC courses are completed in the ILYA region for this year, consider hosting an event next year.
420 ILYA Champs - White Bear Lake

Welcome 420 sailors,

The White Bear Yacht Club would like to invite all 420 sailors to the 420 Inland Championships held on White Bear Lake on June 27-29. White Bear is one of the oldest yacht clubs in the inland association, and we are excited to have one of the newest classes sailing on our lake.

Registration begins on the 27th of June with practice starts and racing in the afternoon (check the N.O.R for scheduled times).  Friday evening will be an anniversary party for White Bear's 125th birthday. It will be held at the yacht club pool.  All sailors and parents are welcome! The N.O.R will have dinner pricings, food packages, and the estimated time.

We will race on Saturday and Sunday, and have a small awards ceremony to follow the regattas end. A minimal amount of charter boats are available. We hope to see you all at White Bear in June! If you have any questions refer to the N.O.R posted on the I.L.Y.A website, or email Ed Cox at

See you on the water,

Ed Cox

New kids and old faces
To read the National E scow association report, click here. Be sure and read the crew roster to see loads of surprises. Families together, old established crews, some famous folks who are rock stars (JD and Junior) - what a great start to Midwest E scow sailing. In the end, it was Chris Jewett, Pat Hughes with local Harry Melges
