Stefan Schmidt and Jim Petersen Win Fleets 

Five quick races, shifting winds  but what fun! The event began with a successful Bilge Pullers followed by two days of continued hospitality. Cedar worked the event for weeks ahead to generate enthusiasm. Above are Stefan Schmidt, Mendota, who also won the champion of champion for the best series; PRO Chip Mann; Jim Petersen, Geneva who appears a bit wet. Both sailors won their first regattas in their respective classes.

Lake Geneva Yacht Club is excited to announce that the forecast for the E-scow Spring Regatta is at least 80 degrees, sunny, and breezy for both Saturday and Sunday, May19-20. If you like competitive racing, you should come to this premier event! Additional incentives include a Velocitek $1,000 speed challenge, a blockbuster Saturday night steak dinner, and camaraderie from around the country (East Coast and West Coast attendees already pre-registered). Come join us for an excellent event to kick off the 2012 racing season!

Do you like racing E scows? Do you like winning $1,000?
If so, you're in luck! Come to the E-Scow Spring Regatta next weekend on Lake Geneva and show off your speed!  Regatta sponsor Velocitek will be holding a Speed Challenge during racing on Saturday, May 19. The lucky winner of the Speed Challenge will receive a $1,000 Line Honors gift card prize at the steak dinner at LGYC on Saturday night. If you don't own a Velocitek, there will be a number of demo units available for use.  They will be checked out before the regatta on a first come, first served basis.
The Spring regatta is fast approaching!  The event is on May 19-20 with a registration opening Friday May 18 in the afternoon. Already the 2011 winners of the Spring Regatta, Invite, Inland and Nationals have pre-registered. Don't miss out on this chance to sharpen your skills, race against some world class competitors, and have fun before Summer even officially starts!

Laser And Vanguard 15 event May 19-20

This is an open regatta. All yachts of the participating classes are welcome. Lasers are welcome to switch back and forth between 4.7, Radial, and full rigs. Switching may not be performed while underway, however. If 5 or more Radials are registered, they will have their own start, scoring, and trophies. Rig switches will not be permitted within the Radial fleet.

Learn how to successfully coach Club 420 racing techniques to advanced sailors. This will include learning

  • tuning tips specific to the 420 Club,
  • techniques that increase speed,
  • the right methods to teach tuning and speed techniques in the classroom
  • Drills that bring home the lessons learned

Danielle Soriano. A dozen years of successful competition in Match racing, A-Cat, Europe Dinghy and keelboats. Years of high level coaching experience in IOD's and 420's.

 Southern Clinic- June 9-10 - Lake Beulah  

420 sailors and 420 wannabes, mark your calendars. Lake Beulah will host the first annual ILYA 420 Summer clinic. Danielle Soriano will return  to build on your skills. We have hope that Matchracing Champions Taylor Canfield and Stephanie Roble will assist on Saturday. Housing and food (breakfast, lunch and dinner)are included. Attendance to the Mexican Minute to Win It party on Beulah is included. Price is $100 per sailor. Come as a team. A limited number of boats will be provided. BYO boat is always welcome. Northern Clinic June 16-17 
Next attend a clinic on Calhoun. Lunches will be included. The instructor for the north is Kevin Jewett. Look for more info in the next Scowlines.

Regatta season for our 420s begins with the Lake Beulah Sailing School Regatta. Then get ready for Nagawicka and Geneva.

420  Opportunity for All ILYA Youth ppofgunigy vof zll

This is your chance...if you are in 8th grade, and younger than 25, to learn all about the Inland's newest sanctioned fleet....the 420.  Pewaukee Lake Sailing School is welcoming any interested sailors to come and join the 420 racing class. PLSS will supply the boat, you just need to sign up!  Have your own boat? Bring it over for class and receive a discount for class.


Sailors will learn trapeze and spinnaker, along with 420 techniques, and a chance to race. There are two sessions being held this summer. Classes will be run by PLSS new head coach, Danielle Soriano and run from 5:30 - 7:30 Tuesday and Thursday nights.  The first session runs from June 12th - July 5th, and the second session from July 10th - August 2nd.


Also, not only is this a great opportunity to race and learn the 420, but taking the class can also give you the opportunity to charter one of the PLSS 420s for the first 420 Inland Championship on Mendota this summer.  Want more info?  Click here for all the details and application form: www.tinyurl.com/PYC420class

Chris Banholzer has been selected as team captain for the 2012-13 season.
College Nationals - Texas
Midwest sailors will travel to Texas at the end of the month to compete in three national championships all at the same site. From the College of Charleston, Chris Banholzer competed in the Co-ed qualifiers. From Wisconsin, Joe and George Kutschenreuter and Michael Lee also qualified. From Tufts University, Will Haeger and from Boston College, Annie Haeger will represent their schools. Colin Smith of Brown completes our complement of co-ed sailors. More on Team Racing and Women's Nationals in next week's edition
High School Sailing
Mallory - Double Handed Nationals - partial report from Scuttebutt 

The 2012 High School Doublehanded Championship (Mallory trophy) was sailed on Lake Union on May 11-13. Both days saw cloudless skies and temperatures in the 70s with winds between 5 and 12 knots. Twenty teams competed, with A-division sailing Vanguard 15s and B-Division sailing Flying Juniors. 

 The two Midwest representatives were New Trier and Lake Forest. The Lake Forest team of Malcolm Lamphere (sophomore) and Alex Curtiss  (senior) finished 7th. New Trier was 13th. Full results with protests - check out the concise protest report form and the calibre of judges for the event.
