Prange Receives Ed Malone Trophy
2015 RC Award
Okauchee's Mark Prange was presented with the 2015 Award for Distinguished Race Committee work by Commodore Steve Schmidt. Prange has hung up his tiller and traded his boat for a Whaler to travel with wife Debbie to serve many, many regattas. He brings a sailors' perspective to the course. Congrats to Mark who will work this year as MC Invitational PRO, 420 ILYA Champs and at the ILYA Champs on Geneva.
Bowers Competing NOW for Olympic berth
Palma, Spain
Only one day of racing in due to cancelled races on Day 2. Read Bowers pre-event report:

This is the preview Flash for the Princess Sofia Regatta in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. This event (March 28-April 2) is the 2nd of two events for US Olympic Selection in the Men's Laser.

After the first event in Miami, I'm 8 places behind Charlie Buckingham. So here in Palma, I have to beat him by 8 or more places in the overall standings at the end of the regatta. As I said before, the odds are not in my favor.
But the odds have never been in my favor & they are now better than ever before. So I will take those odds! Tomorrow I will launch with an unburdened, free mentality. I will race with a clean conscience each day and we will see when the smoke clears 6 days from now next Saturday.

This regatta features all 10 Olympic classes. As usual, the Laser fleet is the biggest with 147 competitors.

Coach Maru is once again supporting me at this event. We came directly from 12 days of training in Rio de Janeiro with a number of the best guys in the world. The training quality was very high each day. I picked up a couple new things, the biggest of which was a tweak to my tacking technique. There were a lot of starts & training races & I feel each part of my game got some clean work given the conditions we had. One of the days, the training group was outside the bay on Copacabana course area when we were enveloped by a massive rain storm! The rain was so heavy that we could not see the land close to the North. My compass was the only tool to orient myself in the driving rain. Finally, we abandoned training for the day. This was followed by an intense downwind back to the entrance of Guanabara Bay. I have never seen rain like that in my entire life!

My preparation has been good for this event. 1 race at a time starting tomorrow.

Olympic Class sailing is a game of natural selection with bottlenecks along the way. Country selection is the final bottleneck before the Olympic Games. I'm ready for the fray & the chaos tomorrow.

Thank you to everyone who has supported me to this point!

ILYA Champs Sponsorship

Sponsorship Impacts Sailors' Value
With Scowslants' deadline near, the online registration system will be next - made "live" May 1. The social pricing for many of our events depend on sponsorship. If you want to make an impact, appear on the Scowslants and Scowlines banner, consider a donation pledge this week. Your sponsorship is always welcome right up to the last day of an event. However, early sponsorship helps to reduce social event pricing. The social pricing allows our youth, in particular, to decide to join us at our events. It's all connected and we are committed to giving you exposure. Contact dberg@ilya.org to ask questions, to register your intent to promote your business and to provide more value to our sailors. Or donate directly to the ILYA to assist with youth registration fees.

Scowlines will arrive in May with regatta announcements -  plans, social pricing, housing, schedule. The official NORs/ SIs will be under the purview of Chip Mann. They will be published and updated on the regatta registration site throughout the next few months.
