Lamphere Second at Finn North Americans
Our college kids just keep improving. St. Mary's junior Gordon Lamphere completed this weekend's event at Texas Corinthian YC with a second place finish. The twenty competitors came to Galveston for the event. Gordy sailed to runner-up position behind the second highest ranked American Finn sailor. He was sailing with the best minus Zach Railey and placed his name on the Finn contender list. Congrats to Gordon (Lake Geneva).
Mary Ann Ward, Sam Rogers, Peter Keck take Audi Melges 20 Miami Race #3

from Audi Melges 20 website

Miami, Fla. - (2011 Mar. 13) - An ecstatic Mary Anne Ward on M&M Racing Team, along with tactician Sam Rogers and crew member Peter Keck, has been awarded the trophy and title of 2011 Audi Melges 20 Bacardi Miami Sailing Week Champion. This is the first time ever, that a woman has won a premiere open championship in any of the Melges sportboat classes.

"I can't believe it," said Ward. "I'm in shock actually. I've sailed with Sam and Peter on separate occasions, but never together like we did here. They were some of the first guys that I sailed with in order to become a better sailor. We've worked really hard, and I'm so glad that it was Sam and Peter that I won this with."

It was a spectacular heart-pounding day on the water. There was so much at stake. First and foremost, the prestigious title of Bacardi Sailing Week Champion hung in the balance, but also, the scores needed to be decided in the 2011 Miami Winter Series ranking.

Ward captured the event title by the skin of her teeth. Second place finisher Michael Kiss on Bacio, with Chris Rast on tactics and his son Mitchell as crew, was involved in an altercation with Tate Russack on Diesel at the start of race one. Luckily, redress was given and Kiss was able to hang on as runner-up. Unfortunately, overnight leader Paul Reilly on Red Sky, with Andy Burdick as tactician and crew member Mike Kuschner, suffered a difficult day on the water. He was disqualified from the final race, dropping him back to finish third overall.

Paul Reilly's Red Sky was atop the leader board for the first two days. Kent Haeger was 5th the first day. Great racing for our ILYA sailors.

Eco-friendly Sailors - Melges 20, College Sailing and Look for more this summer

Miami, Fla. - (2011 Feb. 28) - In an effort to reduce waste at regattas and preserve our lakes and oceans, the U.S. Audi Melges 20 Class will be teaming up with Melges Performance SailboatsCoconut Grove Sailing Club and Eco Sports Bottles to earn 'Gold Level, Clean Regatta' status with Sailors for the Sea.

To complete the task of cleaning up regattas, and earn Gold status, the Audi Melges 20 Class must complete 15 or more of the items listed on the best practices list provided by Sailors for the Sea. While a few of these are very simple to achieve, some are more complex, like ridding regattas of trash and eliminating the biggest culprit of ocean destruction, plastic water bottles.

In a typical 25 boat, 3-day event, over 600 plastic water bottles will be disposed of at the end of the regatta, and if lucky, they will all find their way to the recycling bin. Unfortunately, most end up in our landfills, and even worse, floating in our oceans.

Melges Performance Sailboats has teamed up with Eco Sports Bottles to provide each Audi Melges 20 competitor at Bacardi Miami Sailing Week with a 30 oz, reusable aluminum water bottle to be used throughout the event, and at future events. By competitors making the extra effort to fill up these bottles at the beginning and throughout the day, this will reduce a massive amount of plastic at the end of an event.

Eliminating plastic from regattas is just one of the steps to becoming a 'Gold Level, Clean Regatta', and with hard work from the competitors in the Audi Melges 20 Class and Coconut Grove Yacht Club, cleaning up regattas will be attainable. Audi Melges 20 competitors are encouraged to review the "Best Practices" list found on the Sailors for the Sea website to learn how they can help.

Sailors for the Sea is a nonprofit organization that educates and empowers the boating community to protect and restore our oceans and coastal waters. Check out Clean Regattas Best Practices list

Eco Sports Bottles are environmentally friendly sports water/hydration bottles made from lightweight, high grade aluminum or stainless steel. Our stainless steel water bottles are the only completely FDA approved, stainless steel eco-friendly water bottles on the market. Not only will Eco Sports Bottles provide a discount to Audi Melges 20 sailors on future purchases, a portion will also go back to the benefit of the Audi Melges 20 Class.

The Intercollegiate Sailing Association has been encouraging ecofriendly bottles for its events. Look for this method of water replenishment this summer at our youth events.
