Board of Directors Meet
ilyaburgee New Directors Elected
Jim Petersen from Lake Geneva and Darby Sugar from Mendota join the ILYA Board of Directors for a three-year term. Jim brings experience in A, C, X and Opti to the Board. Darby crews actively on an E and has a few years' wait until she begins to tow an Opti around.
2014 ILYA Champs
A conscious effort will be made to refer to Oshkosh and all future events as the ILYA Champs. This is to give us an identity and branding which denote the caliber of sailing displayed at this event. Oshkosh sets the stage for our future years. With no better place to trial a new format, Oshkosh promises the best in sailing and fun. Registration will be easier this year as we adopt "Regatta Network" as our tool for registration, scoring and sponsorship/media coordination. Some events are already posted. Click HERE. Parking and launching from Millers Bay will be made easier with a one-time pass to the launch site rather than a daily fee.
2015 ILYA Champs
The Board has concluded its initial investigation into a multi-year single site event. Lake Geneva Yacht Club will celebrate the opening of the Buddy Melges Sailing Center by agreeing to host the inaugural regatta under the new format. While sponsorship and social details continue to develop, the Board wholeheartedly approved the concept of a multi-year event to gain efficiencies, re-emphasize the focus of a family event and bring together our fleets in a single time frame.
Race Committee
The Board recognizes the importance of exceptional coordination among the fleets and RC on the water and those awaiting a later start to the day. Most race committee working the event will work both AM and PM sessions so daily knowledge of the conditions will be enhanced for faster turn around. In addition, the Board established a new position of Race Coordinator who will coordinate the two working race committees to assure fair distribution of water time. Tom Hodgson will serve in this capacity at Oshkosh with a member of the Executive Committee as support.
Sailing Schools
For many years, the ILYA has welcomed youth sailors from the Lake Michigan Sailing Race Federation to our youth events. The Optimist and 420 classes are national classes which have provided us with opportunities to attract and sail against many fine sailors from outside the ILYA. Our bylaws, however, have some membership restrictions which limit the length of time a club can send sailors to our events before membership requirements are in place. The ILYA Board created a new membership category for sailing schools who currently do not have scows but do share in our love of Opti and 420 youth sailing. Dues will be the same for LMSRF and ILYA members.
Rules Changes
The MC fleet voted to allow outside assistance to assure safety but to improve ease of participation.
Youth classes will be required to wear Coast Guard-approved PFD's. The measurement process of classes X and Opti will check for proper PFD. (The Magic Marine PFD may not be Coast Guard approved so check the tag to determine its legality. While some PFD's may be legal in other countries, the standard in the US is the ability to right a person face up in the water.) Terminoolgy for all PFD's in all boats includes "Coast Guard-approved.
The class X whisker pole experiment will be converted to permanent language in the scantlings. This is advantageous mechanically for the very small crew. It has NO speed advantage.
Other news
The newly-formed Fleet Council will work with the Race Committee to establish a path to participation in ILYA RC work
Both a judging and race committee seminar will be held in the spring in the ILYA region. - Look at calendar on left.
Foundation News
The ILYA Foundation mission has been changed to support the growth of X Boat fleets in member clubs for the 2014 season. The ILYA welcomes requests from clubs who are interested in assistance with the purchase of three or more boats. The clubs must commit to sponsoring homelake racing and instruction. The participating families must commit to attendance at the ILYA X Champs. For more info, contact scowslants@aol.com.
