William Freytag
Hall of Fame Honoree
Editor's Note: I realize many of the younger sailors don't recognize the contribution of folks like Smiles Freytag. At a time when scow sailing was in its younger years, folks like Smiles traveled the country taking boats to demonstrate their attributes, to introduce new regions to scows. "Like Smiles?" Maybe it just WAS Smiles. He cherished friendships throughout the US. In jest, folks tell the tale that he loaded up a trailer and would not come home until they were sold. To many, Smiles was the frequent face of Melges Boat Works.

I have been to Lake Geneva Yacht Club perhaps 100+ times in my life and, with no exaggeration, I can say 90 of those times Smiles was there. It might be a driveby to see if things were OK; checking the site. If racing was occurring, there was a table where Smiles sat. Soon Jane Pegel or Buddy would sit near him. He knew the name of every sailor. He knew every innuendo of the breeze on Geneva. He loved every race win by any sailor.

Joan and Smiles have raised marvelous children and grandchildren who love the sport as much as he did. They assured that distant grandchildren got to attend sailing school, even if it meant babysitting for weeks. The best tribute to their heritage is watching T Freytag's family on boat after boat after boat during the season's races. When one of Smiles' children returns, they are immediately on boats. It's in their blood.

It was the culmination of a career when Smiles was inducted into the Hall of Fame. Smiles was too ill to attend but Joan and T were emotionally moved to accept the award for Smiles. We will all miss him. Thanks, Smiles, for promoting this sport and these boats we all love.

A celebration of Bill's life will be held on Sunday, June 19th from 2:00 - 5:00 pm at the Lake Geneva Yacht Club located at 1250 South Lakeshore Drive, Fontana, WI.  In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to Geneva Lake Sailing School, 1250 South Lakeshore Drive, Fontana, WI  53125.

HUGE SUCCESS
Beyond imagination, ILYA and Lake Beulah members showed up in droves to wish Annie Haeger well in her upcoming Olympic endeavor. Pictured here is Haeger with Delavan's Rachel Beers who will take this flag home to fly over DLYC. Jane Pegel, past three-time Rolex winner, attended. Olympic and Rolex parents Dick and Leslie Barkow came to give "how to see your daughter" advice. In total over 200 attendees raised over $40,000 (and in great fashion bar tips of $500+) to assist with the near $75,000 for coaching, travel, sails for the Rio event.
