Andy Burdick turned 40 and began a new decade with a National Championship.  With boat owner Terry Blanchard, George Beukema, Peter Keck, Ben Porter, and Coye Harrett the I-28 won over Buddy Melges and three strong, strong Minnetonka boats. Magnificent photos of Crystal Lake, fun photos of parties and birthday mischief are featured on the National A website.

The roster for this week's Youth Champs is full of familiar names. The Laser fleet features two Geneva sailors: Clifford Porter (next year UCSD) and Gordon Lamphere (freshman-St. Mary's). Add two more Lake Forest sailors and the Midwest has a strong showing. The thirty-eight Radial fleet is boys and girls mixed and lists Anne Haeger (Beulah and next year Boston College), Colin Smith (Lauderdale and Beulah) and J. Mitchell Kiss (Macatawa Bay) and other familiar names of sailors who have traveled to our area. Thirty-six 420 teams feature some east coast familiar names and Erik Bowers (Minnetonka), Louis Padnos (Macatawa Bay) and Stephanie Hudson (Chicago) are on the roster. The event also features 29er teams. Watch the US Sailing site for results daily.

There are still last minute rooms available thanks to the flexibility of the UW Madison Housing Department. It's not too late to come to the ILYA Youth Champs. PRO Russ Ackley is bringing his team to provide topnotch race committee work. UW has a strong 420 fleet, laser sailors are ready. The price is right! Parents, enjoy a day on the Union Terrace with outdoor dining and beverages while your child sails. State St. is always an experience. It's not too late to be a part of the Mendota scene.

All regatta information can be found at the UW Sailing Team's website at

WHO'S THE YOUNGEST LIFE MEMBER?
AUCTION BRINGS IN TWO NEW MEMBERS
The ILYA no longer offers life membeships but a rare opportunity was available at the Barkow-Ruf Olympic fundraiser. Two memberships were auctioned off in voice auction. After the event, Dick Barkow and John Just are in a face off. Who will receive the two once-in-a-lifetime memberships? For over $2000 each Barkow and Just now need to determine who will be the last or youngest ILYA member. Think of all the folks who are lifetime members now. The ages of current members are, say, 40, 50 or upwards. Grandchild Barkow or Taylor Just will be standing alone. Barkow has yet to declare his intent so, congratulations, Taylor Just -- you are the youngest lifetime member of the Inland Lake Yachting Association.
