Successful Day of Sailing on PewaukeeReport by Ben Biwer
Friday started out looking a lot like Thursday - no wind. However, the weather men made the correct forecast in saying the wind would fill in at 10 AM. It wasn't much, but it was enough to allow Senior PRO Chip Mann and Junior PRO Tom Hodgson to take their fleets out and get two races in. The wind was up and down from 3 to 8 mph but rarely shifted from its original south southwest direction. Both fleets managed to get two races in.
Johnny Ferguson with crew Sam Maxwell from Minnetonka managed to win the first race in the Junior fleet. Johnny held the lead throughout the race and pulled off a solid win. In the second race, Geneva dominated. Malcolm Lamphere with crew Riley Legault from Geneva took race two with fellow Geneva sailors skipper Nathan Freytag and crew Bo Freytag right behind them.
What a drama filled morning for the Senior fleet! Both races came down to the last few boat lengths. The first race was won by Geneva skipper Joe Rolander (I-53) and crew Henry Rolander in a photo finish. Joe and Henry lead at the first winward mark but lost the lead to Eddie Cox (W-66) of White Bear and Kathryn Rusher (A-13) of Cedar Lake. However Joe alone came in the starboard side at the end to take the first race. The second race was also quite dramatic. Kate Klement of Beulah (B-111) with crew Teresa Westin took the trophy in another exciting and close finish. In the last 100 yards, the lead bounced between Minnetonka skipper Griffin Robillard (M-22), Kate Klement, and another Minnetonka skipper Addy Ferguson (M-67). Kate took the race in the last few feet beating out Addy in a very close finish.
After another delicious lunch hosted at the Pewaukee Yacht Club, the sailors went out for a hopeful afternoon. Light wind and on and off rain was all they experienced. Both fleets cancelled racing for the day at 5 PM.
Friday evening is very eventful at the club with Champion Chicken catering the event and carnival type games on the front lawn.
Racing is scheduled for a 9:30 warning for both fleets on Saturday morning. Let's hope the rain and storms stay away and we have some solid breeze!
