Inland X Champs - Oshkosh - Here We Go!

 Seventy-nine Sailors Vie for Title
The beautiful Waters welcomed sailors and parents to the 70th running of the ILYA X Champs. The Opening Ceremony featured the Parade of Lakes - which was inaugurated right here in Oshkosh, featured speaker Jim Smith and fun and frivolity provided by the sailors. The visiting boats are sailed out of Menominee Park with evening festivities at the Waters - the old Legion Hall renovated and now privately run by the Wymans. The photo above shows the magnificent views from this picturesque site.
Past X sailor Kate Wyman of Oshkosh opened the evening with a beautiful, traditional, most impressive rendition of the national anthem.
Oshkosh Commodore Tom Castle welcomed the crowd to Oshkosh with the logistics of traversing this great body of water. The town's main hotel can be accessed by water. Parents will be treated to the large spectator boats driven by the many volunteers for the event.
Keynote speaker this year was Jim Smith, Executive Secretary of the ILYA. Jim spoke of the volunteer nature of the ILYA, its long history - 116 years - and the love of the sport which sustains all our enthusiasm and participation.
ILYA Commodore Peter Friend spoke to the sailors about our reputation for good sportsmanship and fair sailing. His pride for the organization was evident as he reviewed the sailors encircled by lakes as he spoke. Peter hails from Pewaukee, the largest contingent in attendance.
Beulah and Cedar listened intently to the speakers. They began a circle of sailors with each lake's burgee first hoisted by the sailors and then implanted in the Waters impressive waterfront presentation area.
Pewaukee and host club Oshkosh concluded the parade of sailors (one White Bear sailing team brought up the rear) in colorful display of the greens.

It's all set to commence with a 9:00 hour gun. PROs Mark Tesar on Seniors and Chip Mann on Juniors are ready to start. Winds at 5:00 AM look good. Let's get sailing.

 No Tears - East
   Nagawicka Hosts 66-boat event
Both the Junior and Senior Fleets boasted a healthy 33-boat fleet boding well for the health of youth sailing in SE Wisconsin. Homeake Nagawicka has a resurgence of activity in the Opti and X. Volunteers from the "old days" returned to host the event.

Sailors were treated to a day of fun on the water with light air developing into steady breeze in the afternoon as all races were completed. The junior fleet completed four; the seniors five.

Due to a decision made at the Winter Inland, results were not announced at the event. The Optimist committee decided to score but not award trophies to keep the emphasis on learning and performance individually rather than comparatively.

The results are posted on the ILYA website but since there were no written sailing instructions - in keeping with the no trophies - each parent can interpret the results to a child's advantage. The 2013-2016 Racing Rules of Sailing stipulate that each series WILL have a throwout unless otherwise specified in the SIs. In both fleets that would have changed the outcome of the winners. Congratulations to the sailors who improved throughout the day.

Junior fleet - The top ten names are the same with or without a throwout but the champions change with a throwout:

1 -9638 Henry Ackley 4-1-4-6 15

2 -15278 Jack Steiner 18-3-2-1 24

3 -17330 Kit Harned 5-4-9-9 27

4 -2131 Will Segerstein 10-9-1-8 28

5 -10835 Isabelle Reitz 7-11-3-12 33

6 -14461 Jackson Walker 17-5-14-4 40

7 -17384 Ian McClenathan 31-6-5-2 43

8 -9640 Sean Mihelich 22-10-8-5 45

9 -2478 Henry Ogden 6-16-11-14 47

10 -12215 Stella Marban 9-27-6-7 49

Senior fleet - The situation repeats itself in the senior fleet where a throwout changes the top two but the top ten names remain the same.

Congratulations to all our sailors. This fleet returns to action on Monday at Lake Beulah for the ILYA Optimist Champs. The RWB fleet will also race. The registration for the Green Fleet is low so there is still time to enter. Most of the sailors at No Tears demonstrated the ability to participate in the Green Fleet. It is a two-day event with a smashing party of games and a southern fried chicken dinner planned.
