 Volunteers Galore, Touching Opening Ceremony

Bilge Pullers

Delavan has pulled out all the stops. -- An honor guard from the Great Lakes Naval Station provided a solemn start to the 70th ILYA X championships. As the a capella soloist stopped in mid anthem with a loss of words, the entire crowd of adults and young sailors completed the anthem supporting her memory lapse. The symbolism of
"the many supporting the one" was not unnoticed. The opening to the regatta is the culmination of many working together to support this great one event. The "many" were the multitude of Delavan members who arrived throughout the day to complete launching, mooring, registration, race committee work, cooking, softgood sales. Chair Richard Beers has produced a spectacular first day to the X Inland.

The two fleets are nearly evenly matched in numbers. PROs Chip Mann and  Tom Hodgson are ready as the fleet practiced in big wind today. Nearly 40 boats attended the practice race. Superstition was the name of the race as nary one leader completed the race. So good luck to all in the next three days.

Buddy Melges was a speaker at the Opening Ceremony - a member of the first X boat class on Delavan. Buddy used his "start first, increase your lead" theme to encourage the sailors humorously. He coaxed sailors to meet new friends this week.

Mendota Big Inland
Have you gone to the Gear and Food link yet?

by Todd Haines

The planning committee for this year's Big Inland has set up a merchandising webpage which was designed to offer regatta specific embroidered gear, pre-order bag lunches and sell party tickets.

The regatta gear can only be pre-ordered this year as there will be no speculative official regatta gear available at the HQ for sale.  Therefore we encourage you to get your order in soon as the deadline is coming up.  For E, C, and I-20 your closing date for ordering gear will be Thursday July 26th, 2012. For A, MC, and Club 420 your closing date for ordering will be Thursday August 2nd, 2012. We will accept orders after these dates but they will not be available at registration and a $5 plus shipping fee will be added to your order.  Go to http://ilya-champs-2012-mendota-gear.myshopify.com/collections/frontpage to place your orders.

The bag lunches are being organized by the UW Hoofers and made by the Silvermine Sub Shop in Madison.  They can be preordered on line which we encourage you do as it will help us immensely with our planning.  For those fleets that will be on the water most of the day without a break these bag lunches may be quite important.  They are a great value at $8 and include an offering 3 versions. One with Ham, One with Turkey, and one Vegetable sandwich.  Each lunch will come with Chips, Chocolate Chip Cookie, an Apple, and condiments.  Go to http://ilya-champs-2012-mendota-gear.myshopify.com/collections/frontpage to place your orders.  They will be delivered each morning to the Park for pickup before you leave the ramp or mooring field.

Party tickets are also available on this site for both the Friday's event Parties.  Once again it will help the planners greatly if you order your tickets in advance.  We have planned a spectacular evening-one not to miss and at $25 per person you cannot go wrong.  The venue is spectacular on the rooftop terrace of the UW Pyle Center right on the lake.  The ticket price includes sponsored Capitol Brewing Beer, heavy appetizers, The Dr Tom Hodgson show-w/ live music and ILYA historical anecdotes.  Go to http://ilya-champs-2012-mendota-gear.myshopify.com/collections/frontpage to place your orders.

Lastly, we have created a club like atmosphere at the park with a 30'X60' tent.  Craig Parker and his crew will be serving sponsored Capitol Brewing beer, sponsored Old Sugar Distillery Rum, Brats, Burgers, Hotdogs, soda, candy and other sundries at the Bilge Puller Pavilion Headquarters.  Additionally, we will be running raffle out of this venue w/ some very nice donated items by our sponsors.  You will be able to buy tickets for this at registration, at the Cantina, and at the parties.  The final drawing will be at the last Friday night party.  You will not need to be present to win as long as you've filled out your contact info on the ticket.
