GLSS Dinghyfest

Monday -Tuesday It's all X

Wind, wind and more wind! This was a test of long windward legs, wavy downwinds and great sailing. Fifty-nine teams competed in what is often called the most challenging event of the early season. Four different race winners in five races but it was Harry Melges and Chapman Petersen who clinched the event with two consecutive race victories on Tuesday. Pewaukee's JP Friend was leading on Monday but sustained boat damage at Race 5 start. After a lengthy hearing on a redress request, he was awarded a new finish position but Melges' final 1-1 were outstanding and stood him in first.

Jared Plummer, Kit Harned, Owen Swearingen, Will Harned, Audrey Foley, Liza Mikacich and Ashley Mueller with instructgors Will Huerth and Andrea Sullivan

If it's Wednesday, it's Opti and 420 Dinghy

The wind remained and the waves got rolling. Thirty-one RWB sailors sailed four races with Nagawicka's Henry Chapman and Pewaukee's Meta Simon dominating. Chapman had four bullets and Simon four runnerup finishes.

It was a most EXCITING Green fleet in a steady 12 and gusts to 17 for the 24 sailors. A few RWB sailors realized the transition was too much in this early season regatta and returned to Green. The Green fleet PRO reassessed after two races, brought the fleet in for more verbal instruction on big wind and wave sailing and divided the fleet into two divisions for four more after-lunch races. The skill level growth from morning to afternoon was visually astounding. The "Cakes" (sailors chose their division designation) upper level Green had essentially no racing tipovers as the sailors learned better body positioning, "sail and bail" techniques, riding the waves and more controlled sail trim. It was an impressive day. Thanks to Andrea Sullivan (Geneva) and the Compall - Marozza (Delavan) team for taking the "Pies" newbies into a more controlled wind area and shorter length of course situation which allowed them to enjoy a successful big wind day.

A Florida visiting sailor, Audrey Foley, took the top Green position but Kit Harned (Pine) challenged her with strong top five finishes 2-3-2-4-2-2. Congrats to all the Green fleet sailors and PARENTS who trusted the race committee to guide their children in big wind.

Get prepared for the regatta season It's that time of year for parents anxiety level to rise. "Mom, look what happened in sailing school today." Kyle Navin of Lake Geneva brought home this surprise right before GLSS X.
It's time to check lines, wires, flotation, etc as we are set to travel this month.
X boaters - the item to be checked this year is PFD. Make sure you are using a Coast Guard approved PFD. Some of the most comfortable life jackets are NOT US approved. Some dealers are now identifying the non-approved devices as bouyancy apparel rather than PFDs.
Opti sailors - a safety check will be performed at No Tears and ILYA Opti. Three flotation bags are required; flotation foam is not a substitute. Do not cut the painter. It seems long but is the proper length for safe towing in case of emergency. Whistles on PFDs, please.

Training Regatta at Cedar (TRAC)

Optimist Dinghy

Red, White, Blue, Green
July 11, 2014
Cedar Lake Yacht Club

Come enjoy a great event with your young Optimist sailors. Training seminars will be held for both sailors and parents. On the water coaching will be encouraged so that all kids have a great time. This is a great opportunity to improve sailing skills and help to get parents familiar with what the sport of sailing is all about. In addition, for those coming to the Opti Inland it will be a great opportunity to get acquainted with the venue for the big event. If you have any questions, please contact Ed Eckert (, 262-675-0836)
