Our Sailors Near and Far
Orange Bowl- Youth
The Buddy Melges Racing Team, comprised of ILYA and Chicago sailors, traveled to Miami during Christmas to compete in Opti sailing at its biggest US venue. Color-coded fleets, salt water and lots of supposed warm weather (not as promised) brought the team great building experiences for the future. Results here.

Over on the Laser Radial course, Chapman Petersen raced to a strong 7th place finish in a strong 96-boat fleet.

Laser Atlantic Coast Championships
Chapman Petersen in Laser Radials and Malcolm Lamphere & Erik Bowers in full rigs again participated in Miami in early January. Results here.

Skiff Midwinters
Steph Roble and Maggie Shea WON the event in a new boat christened the morning of the event. The boat is the result of generous work and money from Lake Beulah and the ILYA Foundation. The purchase of boats has proven problematic for the ILYA Foundation to embrace. Thanks to Jim Campbell, US Sailing Olympic Chief Business Office, and the Foundation who met in earnest at the ILYA Champs, US Sailing expedited the process through US Sailing to make this purchase happen for the Roble-Shea campaign. (For any interested, take notice campaigning for the Olympics is fought around a business table as well as on the water.) Roble commented, "a new boat created an ease of boat speed we had not experienced before and all of our hard work on boat handling this winter shined through on the race course. Thank you to for the opportunity." Roble-Shea are warming up for Sailing World-Miami Championships at the end of the January. This event was previously called the Miami Olympic Classes Regatta. 2018 is a very important year because they can start qualifying the country for the Olympics at the World Championship in August if they place in the top eight. Results

Next UP!
Competition will be tough as World Sailing Cup - Miami begins this week. Look for Malcolm Lamphere and Erik Bowers in the Laser; Steph Roble and Maggie Shea in the 49er FX and Harry Melges IV and Finn Rowe in the 49er. Watch here for results.  All our sailors begin sailing on Tuesday - 49ers end on Friday; Lasers on Saturday.
Instructors - Here and There
Mendota
The Madison Youth Sailing Foundation is looking for a summer instructor. What better place to live and work? Optis and X boats are the fare. The classes will be small so you have the opportunity to make your mark and bring young sailors along rather quickly. Note that neither Monona nor Mendota YCs have sailing schools so this is where you want to be if you are in Madison. The families of these sailors are devoted E boaters and active keelboaters. The potential is there to take this program and develop some new sailors who learn to love sailing.  Contact Andrew Muller for more information.

Naval Academy
These are full-time positions for a couple weeks to a 10-week session. The application process began January 8th and will remain open until all positions are filled. The Naval Academy program is administered by Joni Palmer. To the "oldsters", she is known as the first "guru" of sailing school operation. Many clubs attended her courses to learn how to run programs safely and efficiently. Annapolis has to be one of the most beautiful sailing ports to visit.

Come visit Okoboji Sailing Center and Okoboji Yacht Club for "sailing" while the water is hard.

Wahpeton, IA: Aspiring sailors of all ages are invited to stop by the Okoboji Sailing Center (OSC), located on Manhattan Beach on West Lake Okoboji on Saturday, January 27th. In addition to a hot chocolate bar, Winter Gamers will be able to participate in gutter sailboat races, practice knot tying, and create sailing inspired art. Families and children will also be invited to enjoy a half-mile nature walk between OSC and Iowa Lakeside Laboratory for its Lakeside Winter Family Fest from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm to participate in a variety of indoor and outdoor activities focused on our great outdoors.
A hot chocolate bar and other sweet treats will be served between 12 noon to 5:00 p.m. Stop by with the kids to warm yourselves by the bonfire, enjoy the beautiful view of Millers Bay on your excursion, and learn more about youth and adult sailing on Lake West Okoboji. Gutter sailboat races will take place all afternoon. Practice your knot tying or learn how to tie a proper bowline, clove hitch or reef knot. Art supplies will be available to create colorful sailing pictures. Bring your snowshoes or cross-country skis if you want to check out the lake or build a winter snow castle.
You and your family can also follow a luminaire trail from OSC around Little Miller's Bay to visit Iowa Lakeside Laboratory and enjoy nature activities, sledding, and more treats from 11:00 a.m. to 3 p.m. OSC and Iowa Lakeside Laboratory are introducing some collaborative programming during the summer of 2018 too and this is your opportunity to learn more. For information, contact OSC at (712) 337-0121 or visit our Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/SailingOkoboji/. For more information about the Lakeside Winter Family Fest contact (712) 337-3669 Ext 7 or visit their Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/LakesideLab/
