HAPPY NEW YEAR - and what a change it brings!
ILYA Announces New Executive Director
David Berg (Beulah) has been named the new ILYA Executive Director after 37 years of service by Jim Smith. The transition is proceeding smoothly. Both Jim and Dave will be working in January. Then Jim takes a much-deserved vacation in February for a month without all of us calling or emailing. He will remain "on call" for as long as we need him. The following letter is from Commodore Schmidt:
"Dear ILYA members and friends,
At our Fall meeting in Madison on November 14, 2015 the Board appointed a hiring committee (HC) to look into reviewing potential candidates to replace Jim Smith who retired after 37 years of dedicated service to the ILYA. The committee received numerous applications and endorsements for candidates and was impressed with the interest shown and talents they hold. After an exhaustive review of the information submitted, phone interviews and personal interviews with the top candidates, and HC discussion, the HC came away with unanimous agreement as to our recommendation for the Executive Director role. I am very grateful to the HC and the Board for all their hard work in this process.
The HC presented its candidate to the Board for discussion and approval. The Board overwhelmingly approved, and I'm very pleased to introduce all of you to our new Executive Director, David Berg (Beulah). We all agreed that he would be a great asset to the organization and brings a diverse set of skills that can keep us moving forward. His abilities are clearly in line with addressing all of the duties the position demands. David will start immediately by working closely with Jim Smith to ensure a smooth transition.
All of us were very impressed by the caliber, capabilities and past experience of all the people who applied for the position. All of them were worthy candidates, and this says a lot about our organization. To have so many good candidates to choose from was impressive and humbling and I thank them for their time and interest.
We will publish a short bio on David so you can get to know him better. I encourage all of you to introduce yourselves to him at a future regatta or ILYA event. The best way you can learn more about David and help grow our great organization is to volunteer with your Club and the ILYA.
Please join me in welcoming David Berg as ILYA Executive Director.
Happy New Year!
Steve Schmidt, Commodore
Welcome, Dave Berg
The entire Berg family is posted here so the X boat families, in particular, can relate the Berg name to the "new man on the block". Dave, obvious above, is flanked by Mary (junior in high school, C boat crew), Annie (X crew) and sometimes skipper in brother John's (far right) X. John is a freshman in high school. Wife Marge (second from right) holds it all together for the Skokie, IL and Lake Beulah family.
Dave comes with a vast experience base which will help in his new role and a new role to the ILYA as we transition to an Executive Director. Here are some aspects from his bio:
Throughout his professional career, Dave Berg has cultivated a diverse and unique skill set. At the outset of his career, Dave was fortunate to spend twenty years as a broker and trader in the capital markets of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange.
Following that, Dave founded Lodge One Media Group, a production company dedicated to producing socially responsible media content. Dave has created and produced ambitious and successful programming, including the Emmy Award winning documentary, "Reporting for Service with Bryan Anderson" about a local two-tour Iraq war veteran and triple amputee.
Most recently, Dave has followed in the footsteps of his recently-departed father as a tax preparer and has earned the federal designation of Enrolled Agent in that pursuit.
Dave also serves on the Board of Directors at Regina Dominican High School, acting as Chairman of the Marketing Committee as well as serving on the Capital Campaign Committee. Dave also serves on the Lake Beulah Sailing School Board. In that capacity, he has chaired the LBSS Opti regatta and annually serves as "chef" for the sailing school fundraiser.
Finally, Dave has been fortunate to sail as a C-scow crew on Pistakee Lake, Lake Beulah and at many regattas throughout the ILYA over the course of the past 25 years. He and his wife Margaret and have three children Mary, John and Anne who have been sailing in the Opti, X and C fleets for the last 11 years loving every minute of it.
Dave plans to visit many of you during his first year through regatta service, individual and club visits. The ILYA welcomes Dave and appreciates his excitement in this new role.
|Jim Smith Divests Himself from ILYA Assets
| . . . or Kathy said, "Clean it up, bub!"
The ILYA office continues to remove artifacts in preparation for the next era. Do you have an interest in one or more of the several Uniden TBR 60 "Tackle Box" Radios? This were donated back in the day when VHF was new to Race Committee, and these could be transferred from boat to boat at regattas. We bought them instead of handhelds because we feared the handhelds would not get charged up each night. Plus the Unidens had 25 watt capability. See photo above. Contact Jim Smith before it's too late ().
Also, more ILYA Centennial salt and pepper shakers have been discovered hiding in a box. Want a set?
Does anyone still Use Canon ink cartridges BCI 15 and BCI 16? If so, I have some unused that might work for you.
