US Sailing Honors Our Own at One Design Symposium in Ohio

fletcher driscoll   Fletcher Driscoll Wins Leadership Award

White Bear A fleet's grandest supporter, Fletcher Driscoll, was honored for his 50-year commitment to sailing. Past US Sailing President, Dave Rosekranz, above left, reviewed Driscoll's past and present contributions to developing the largest A fleet in the nation. Current US Sailing president, Tom Hubbell, is holding the award in the photo above.

Driscoll's wife, Beverly,  accepted the prestigious award alongside Fletcher who was most gracious and informative in his acceptance speech. With a humorous note, he mentioned one of his grandest accomplishments was receiving Conservation Association permission to PARK these magnificent boats along his lakefront. Driscoll is known throughout the Inland for restoring boats in the off-season, offering the newly-restored vessels to promote sailing on his homelake and for his generous support, storage and promotion of sailing on his beloved White Bear.

As an aside, the creativity award was presented to another past resident of White Bear, MIke Martin, for his work on the electronic umpiring system to be utilized with the America's Cup boats. Look for a trickle down product in future years.

Pewaukee Feted as Club of the Year

Dave DEx   Eight events in a short season, fifteen sponsors to support the overall sailing experience for all the sailors, a National Championship A event, the ILYA Opti Inlands where 500 lunches were served daily and over 130 volunteers worked on the event, an E Blue Chip as always and the US Sailing Champion of Champions in C scows - all borrowed - made Pewaukee Yacht Club the prime choice honoring the extraordinary effort of a yacht club. Add over 250 local races in spite of the busy regatta schedule and you get the picture of the devotion displayed by PYC.  Commodore Dave "Dex" Decker accepted the award with a short acceptance speech  with the message, "Just ask, and they won't say no". Congratulations to Pewaukee for a job well done.
The Success of Scows
Lon Schoor and Candace Porter presented one of the featured presentations to the One Design participants. The Symposium boasted representation from over 40 one design classes. Scows were represented by the MC sailors Bob Cole and Rick Trester; E sailor Lon Schoor and wife Donna and Bob Cole; A scow sailors David Porter, Todd Haines, Dave Decker, Fletcher Driscoll and wife Beverly; and C scow sailor David Porter with wife Candace. Race Committee member Larry Kmiecik attended with an ear toward our officials' interests.
The emphasis of the presentation was the strength we enjoy due to our family of boats, participant families and family-relationship with our builder and suppliers. Schoor spoke eloquently on our passion for our boats and our efficient, thoughtful and careful process to evoke change in our boats. Some quick facts:
  • Over 100+ clubs sailing scows in the US
  • 115 years of scow sailing in the US
  • Buddy Melges - still sailing, still building, still teaching
  • 2588 MCs in total production
  • Rolex Yachtspersons of the year - Melges, Pegel and Barkow and who is next?

Come to the Winter Inland to enjoy the marvelous photos from Pat Dunsworth, the video from Petey Crawford and our outline of the presentation.

Okauchee Prepares for 2013 C Blue Chip
Mark your calendars; the 54th annual C-Scow Blue Chip Championship Regatta is being held on Okauchee Lake September 20th-22nd, 2013. Okauchee Lake Yacht Club is proud to be hosting this prestigious event and building on the tradition of excellence established by Pistakee Yacht Club dating back to 1960. The primary goal of the OLYC regatta committee (chaired by Kurt Prange) is to invite the top sailors from the fleet, and field the strongest roster possible thereby creating a must attend event.   Many of the long standing Blue Chip traditions will
remain in place, and new ones will likely be developed. There will be more information and details available in the coming months, but for now mark your calendar for this championship event.
