Letter to Membership
from Dave Berg
Dear ILYA Members,

I am honored and humbled to accept the mantle of the ILYA Executive Director position. I know that I have to fill the shoes of a legend and I hope to be worthy of the task. I really appreciate the confidence that the board has placed in me and I hope to successfully build upon the decades of leadership that Jim has provided as well as the sailing tradition, competition and camaraderie that the ILYA has fostered over the past 118 years.

My first experience as a sailor was 34 years ago in a C-scow on Lake Beulah. At that moment, I not only had no appreciation for the fact that "hiking" had multiple meanings, but also no clue as to the undeniably meaningful role the sailing would come to play in my family's future. In 1991 I became a full time crew on Pistakee Lake and finished out the decade back on Lake Beulah. I have many vivid and enjoyable memories of sailing in C-Scow regattas as well as spectating at Opti and X-boat regattas throughout the ILYA, from Maxincuckee to Mendota to Long Lake to Clear Lake to Gull Lake and back home to Beulah over the years. My wife Margie and I watched as our children met and bonded with other youngsters who would become their lifelong friends in the Corinthian competition of sailing cultivated by the ILYA.

This past summer it really hit home for me during the X-Inland at Pewaukee. A.J. Schweda and Andy Burdick moved the gathering of 3 generations of sailors to appreciate the fact that the ILYA is about sailing at its core; but also about character, sportsmanship, friendship and family. This spirit of the ILYA transcends age, gender and locality in a manner that is truly remarkable and I'm proud to be part of it.

I am so excited to embark upon this journey. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions, comments, advice etc. I look forward to meeting you and hearing from you.

Dave

Jim will be helping with the transition until February 1 when he hopes to be in warm FL visiting his daughter, son-in-law and grandson. The ILYA phone will be active during the transition, as well as his email address.

Bruce Martinson to Teach US Sailing Judges Course Again in East and West
Feb 13 and March 12
Become a US Sailing Certified Judge!  OR  just help out!
Judges are responsible for conducting protest and redress hearings when competitors believe there has been a breach of the rules. Judges also conduct arbitration hearings, enforce Rule 42 (Propulsion) on the water at fleet racing events and consult with organizers and race officers ahead of events to review race documents and procedures.
Judges improve the quality, consistency, and fairness of racing through proper administration of the Racing Rules of Sailing.

What is the Club Judge Seminar?
The US Sailing Club Judge Seminar is a one-day educational course intended to provide sailors and racers an opportunity to obtain practical knowledge and skills required to serve on a Protest Committee at their local sailing club or local regatta venue.
The Club Judge Seminar is NOT intended to serve as a rules seminar or symposium.
Rather, a person would attend the seminar with a goal to:
(1)become a new judge for their local club and able to serve on a protest committee;
(2)for existing members of a protest (or race) committee, sharpen their judging and procedural skills; and
(3)lay the groundwork to (potentially) pursue their US Sailing judging certification.

Then there are those that just can't seem to get enough of a good thing - check out the for last year. Again, the link includes all the details for each regatta.  I'll admit that 2015 might have been a bit much even for me - but I have already marked my calendar and am looking forward to attending these four fun events: Wawasee Spring regatta, the ILYA Invite on my home lake (Mendota),  the new WMYA Invite at Charlevoix, and of course the National Champs at Minnetonka. [note to the H-7 Crew - better mark your calendars too.]

Join and Support US Sailing

As we approach the holidays, I invite you to join your fellow US Sailing members in making a gift that will strengthen the future of sailing.

The giving season reminds us that the future is in the hands of the young. If sailing is to thrive - they must thrive. Our 2015 Annual Appeal initiative, Catch a Lift, will invest your gift in Youth Sailing Programs that provide mentoring and skill building programs at every skill level. These programs build confident lifetime sailors whose love for sailing is carried into the future and will sustain our sport.

Please community of supporters and pledge to provide our young sailors the tools they need to thrive!
