ILYA Board Meeting
You are Welcome to Join Us
Sunday at 9:00 the delegates meet to welcome in new directors and officers. The Board of Directors meeting commences immediately following. We (perhaps - the Board has to elect new officers) say goodby to Steve Schmidt who has led us for the past two years. Steve has ushered in the new ILYA Championship format which is quite an accomplishment. Firstly, to form a plan that Geneva so graciously accepted to allow us all to join together annually in one big party. And what a party it is! Secondly, to boldly motivate all of us to work together on such a task. Your survey comments reveal his vision is exactly what you want. Overwhelmingly, you declare this is what you want in the future - all of us together to sail in multiple fleets, to enjoy watching the other fleets, to socialize as one big group of friends and ILYA family. Thank you, Steve, for your leadership.

The Board will tackle a couple housekeeping tasks which are large in terms of the work to prepare: Marilyn Krause of Pewaukee, Beth Wyman of Oshkosh and Candace Porter of Beulah have revamped the ILYA Regatta Manual to make it more concise and precise with the advent of regatta management software. The new version, if approved, will be loaded to our website the week following the meeting. The Bylaws (first 30 pages) will be up for review. Again, the conversion to electronic registration has changed how we view the regatta process. Additionally, the Board has segregated the Race Committee and the Judges Committees. Bruce Martinson of Minnetonka has agreed to chair the new Judges Committee. Chip Mann of Cedar remains as RC chair. The Youth Development Committee has provided input to the Board for many years but was not directly mentioned by name in the Bylaws. David Strothman of Minnetonka has agreed to chair the committee taking over for the many years of service from Mike Woldum of Calhoun.

The Fall meeting is the preferred timing for the assignment of regatta hosts and the changes in scantlings per the Bylaws. There are always a couple late additions which are carried over to the Winter meeting. The fleet representatives will be reporting on any late changes or suggestions.

The newly formed sponsorship committee, headed by David Perrigo of Pewaukee, will be submitting a report about new challenges and trends in sponsorship. David was in the sports sponsorship business in his younger days and brings a level of expertise not formerly seen on the Board.

Your comments are always welcome and time is provided early in the meeting for your participation. You are also invited to join us for lunch but you must contact David Berg so he has the right number for lunch.

We are so happy to reside for this Board meeting in the old Johnson Boatworks building on White Bear. We look forward to the memorabilia review.

Most Board members arrive on Saturday night. We seem to gather around a single place in a hotel. See if you can find the right room. The Best Western Plus White Bear Country Inn, 4940 State Highway 61, White Bear Lake, MN 55110 is our gathering spot. Please join us Saturday night.
Sailing School Positions Available
Nagawicka Lake Yacht Club is seeking enthusiastic sailing instructors to share their love and knowledge for sailing with our new and returning sailors, while inspiring and motivating them!  Respectful and constructive relationships with both students and parents is a must. We are in need of one experienced, seasoned, full time coach, and one part time coach.
Please forward resumes ASAP to  for consideration and to set up an interview.

Looking for part-time or full-time, preferably full-time, instructors who will teach Opti learn to sail and racing on Lake Mendota. X-boat racing is offered on Lake Monona.
Madison Youth Sailing offers two week sessions for learn to sail Opti in the morning from 9-11, and then racing/ intermediate Opti in the afternoons from 12-4. Opti classes will be held on Lake Mendota, and we are planning on having a racing team that holds races in the evening on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We have a group of families in Maple Bluff that are interested in putting the racing together and holding it at their beach. Instruction on those nights would be offered.
X-boats will be held out of Schulter Beach on Lake Monona. The schedule is only in the afternoons. Madison is looking for experienced X sailors to teach this session.
If you are scheduling summer classes or summer employment, please consider working at this program to build it into a sailing school like you enjoyed as a youth. Contact Parker Waller or Ellen Poole.
Pistakee has not had a nibble on the Sailing Director position available. This is a real opportunity to take one of our past thriving centers of sailing and re-build it. It has an administrative staff that is excited and tapped into the community. They have new boats which shows the generosity or organizational strength of the Sailing School on Pistakee board. If you want to help build a program of Optis, build the summer program which will lead to a strong high school fall program, this is your opportunity. The ILYA Foundation is most interested in developing an X fleet here with your budding Opti sailors as they age into our most successful X program. Here is their original article:
Here is a name from the past for most of us. We all remember the C Blue Chips from year's gone by. Now the C Blue Chip will return this year to its founding waters. The Community Sailing School @ Pistakee is a newly-formed 501(c)(3) with loads of excitement in the Fox River Lakes area. Located in Johnsburg, IL, it is close to the western suburbs of Chicago AND boasts a high school sailing program. They have a unique program where parents can use paddle/windsurf boards while children attend sailing school. The program has O'pen Bics, 420s, Optis and Butterflies.

The program is ready to move into hardcore racing now and is in need of a racing instructor and director. Pay is most competitive, the locale near many of our current schools and sailors in the western Chicagoland area. This is an opportunity to build a program which could be six months immediately with a strong effort to develop high school sailing. Contact  via email or 847-525-6518. .

And think of Pistakee if you are Long Lake, Wonder Lake, Powers, Twin Lakes and Crystal Lake --- many of our strong sailing schools now have formed a "consortium" to get high school sailing going. Or sent your young Opti sailors to Pistakee to help re-build the X fleet in future years on these lakes.

Spring Opti Schedule at Buddy Melges Sailing Center - Weekend Practice and Regattas
The lake is warming up!
Buddy Melges Racing Team Spring Schedule is below.  These are broken out into Lake Geneva Opti Practice dates and travel regatta dates.
For the Geneva practice dates, the Saturdays will likely start a bit later in the morning and run later that day to give people a chance to travel to LGYC, with an early start on Sunday and an earlier wrap up time so that people can get on the road and return home at a reasonable hour. Marek will follow-up with more specifics. If you can only do one of the days of a practice weekend, that's ok, but obviously both days are best!
Lake Geneva Practices (Saturday/Sunday):
- April 1/2 (ice/weather depending)
- April 15/16
- April 22/23
- April 29/30
- May 20/21
