Lou Morgan Sole Inductee Into Hall of Fame
ilyaburgee March 1-2 is Time to Mark Honor for Morgan
In his first year on the ballot, ILYA Past Commodore Lou Morgan received votes to enter his life's sailing accomplishments into the ILYA Bilge Pullers Hall of Fame. Morgan was a favorite in every aspect of his sailing service: competitor, SOCIAL innovator and generous promoter. The phrase "More Fun, Less Hassle" was originated by Morgan. And, really, FUN is all you need to say to remember Morgan's contributions. All are invited to attend. If you are from LaBelle, A fleet, someone who now enjoys our fun, plan to attend to welcome Lou Morgan's family and friends as they celebrate this great man's sailing life. See below to register by February 20th. Join us as we applaud LaBelle's first Hall of Famer.

Also featured:

High Level Opti Clinic - Chicago - April 26-27

Since the spring racing schedule for Opti's in the Midwest is sparse, Chicago Yacht Club has decided to bring in a high caliber coach to run an advanced racing clinic. This year we will be bringing in Scott Norman, a coach for the FAST team who has been coaching Optis at a high level for a number of years. In addition to Scott, Dustin Domer, the head Opti coach at Chicago Yacht Club will be helping out.

The clinic will run Saturday from 9am-4pm and Sunday from 9am-2pm. The price for the clinic will be $300 per sailor. If traveling sailors do not wish to bring their own boat, they can charter one of Chicago Yacht Club's for a fee of $75 for the weekend. (If you charter a boat, it is still recommended that a sail is brought)

This clinic is a great opportunity for the intermediate to advanced Opti sailor to advance their sailing skills and prepare for the 2014 summer season. Some topics that will be covered will include:

            -Proper rigging

            -Boat handling

            -Rules knowledge

            -Starting techniques

            -Upwind and downwind techniques

            -and much more!!!

For more information contact Dustin Domer at (312) 351-5947 or domer@chicagoyachtclub.org

Apply for a Boat Ownership Grant   The ILYA Foundation is taking a moratorium on issuing small grants for regatta participation outside the ILYA. In an effort to bolster our trainer, the X boat, the ILYA Foundation is accepting applications from lakes for family-ownership of three boats per lake. With our current funds, the Foundation feels it can support two lakes. This is a bold new direction for the Foundation. The ILYA feels its success is due in large part to the boat ownership model. Graduating youth sailors have resale cash to investigate the purchase of a scow.
 Here are the initial guidelines:
  • grant for up to 50% of the cost of an X Boat with a maximum of $3,000.00 per boat. The idea is to populate a club with a small beginning fleet. Because of our funding levels we are limiting the total amount to each lake to $9,000. Again, these are to be family, single-owner boats rather than club utilized boats
  • The ILYA member club has no currently active X Boat fleet
  • The club agrees to actively support the new fleet and encourage its growth by providing a racing schedule and training
  • Participating families join ILYA as family members
  • Participating families agree to campaign the boat at the ILYA X Championship each year that they own the boat
  • Member clubs will need a minimum of three boats to start a fleet
  • Boats that are purchased with the help of grant funds cannot be sold at a profit
With a small amount of additional funding we could help two lakes start up fleets in the coming year. If you have any interest in becoming involved in this program please contact Rick Trester Foundation Chair, or Jim Smith for details. Or attend the Winter Inland and ask for a private session to discuss your interest, questions or to seek assistance with the request.
Fun is OPTImum in Okoboji!
