MENDOTA - Fan Favorite

 Andy Burdick:

"Having the good fortune to have gone to school in Madison I can say that sailing and iceboating there is simply fantastic.  Big, wide open water allowing our fast scows to go full speed upwind and downwind.  No need to pinch - go fast!  Mendota is a great place for scow racing! "

Augie Barkow:

"We always love sailing in Madison. It is a great city for some fun social life and water big enough for some good length beats to stretch your hiking legs. Good friends, great sailing and State St. sound like a good combo to me. "

Review of our sailors around the nation and world
 Women's Matchracing
Our favorites, Sally Barkow and Steph Roble, team up on the same boat in Sweden this week.
Hyannis, Buckley and Buzzards Bay
The following is an overview of the trip out east for our 420 and Laser sailors. Submitted by Mike Crary.

Inland sailors have success at East Coast 420 and laser regattas. The Hyannis Regatta at Cape Cod drew 100 sailors from the US and Canada including the 2012 North American champion and the Canadian champion. They sailed in medium winds for two days and heavy winds for day three. All 100 sailors raced together which meant a very long starting line. Will Crary from the White Bear Yacht Club won race one. After 11 races Ben Garber from Lake Minnetonka placed 4th and Will Crary (White Bear) placed 5th. Other Inland participants included Mary Claire Kiernan (Beulah) and Augie Dale from Pewaukee.

The next regatta involved 36 teams (3 boats per team) in a team race format. The CJ Buckley team regatta was sailed out of Providence. The final results are not yet available, but the team of Addie Ferguson from Lake Minnetonka, Isabella Loosbrock from Lake Minnetonka, and Mary Claire Kiernan from Lake Geneva made it to the finals of the Silver division. The team of Will Crary, Anders Eckolm(Minnetonka), and Augie Dale made it to the finals of the Bronze division. There were 6 divisions with 6 boats in each division. Ben Garber was on the winning team - results sent by Sharon Garber.

The final regatta was sailed on Buzzards Bay in New Bedford, Rhode Island. This is the largest one design regatta in the US. Over 400 boats compete in various classes. The largest fleet is the Club 420, eighteen and younger. 120 boats sailed in two fleets for two days, then the top 66 sail the final day in the Gold division and the remaining boats sail in the Silver Division.   The waves were huge and the winds ranged from 15 to 25 all three days. After 11 races Ben Garber had a 1,2,4 with an overall finish of 7th. Augie Dale had a 2,4,4 and ended up 20th. Mary Claire Kiernan placed 29th, Will Crary 37th, Jack Bitney (Minnetonka) place 47th, and Griffin Rolander (Geneva) placed 53rd. Anders Eckholm placed 22nd in the Silver fleet. Malcolm Lamphere from Lake Geneva won the Laser Radial championship with 18 points in 12 races. He bested 80 sailors from all over the US and Canada winning 6 races. Colin Smith (Beulah) won the Vanguard 15 event.
