WYA C
Celebrating 75 years
The morning showed little promise as the fleet arrived but by afternoon the racing was perfection. LaBelle is proving to be a fickle mistress with shoals and shifty winds. The one sure bet is the LaBelle hospitality. During the morning wait for wind, sailors gathered on the display pontoons or paddle boarded - all provided by the many sponsors of this event. LaBelle YC has worked feverishly this past year gathering sponsorship and with an active Facebook page gathering stories from the past WYA years. The Saturday night party was a gathering of past champions along with this year's participants.

Race one finally commenced at 11:50 after the wind circled the compass nearly 70 degrees before settling on day one's direction. Sailors continued to change positions throughout the race; some vacillating 30 places at times. But the OO824 and N181 (really only Nagawicka transplants) seem to have LaBelle in hand. Only Okauchee's Steve Schmidt has maintained consistency.

Dave Harris and Lou Morgan, Jr. seem to own this lake.
B-317 John Porter and Patrick Welscher won Race 4.

Editor's note - The meals here homecooked and served by a legion of LaBelle members are simply phenomenal. Craig Adams smoked 100# of pork shoulder for 12 hours while his wife of private catering fame has assisted with orchestrating the most plentiful sides. Killer brownies is an apt name. The small No Tears participants guarding the dessert table gave sailors recommendations on the dessert choices. It has been a joy to attend here and see the enthusiasm for this event.

          Okoboji - Here We Come!

Okoboji logo If it's Wednesday, It's IOWA C Sailors take to the road again early Wednesday for the ILYA Championships. If you have never traveled to Okoboji, it is a marvelous resort area with large water for quality sailing. It is not too late to reconsider registration so bring a friend and come over to corn country but when you arrive, don't be surprised to experience the most fun ever. Go cart tracks, an amusement partk, small shoppes and marvelous restaurants.

Here is the official overview of the social scene from the hosts:

The social program for the Inland this year is listed on our website at www.oycia.org. I think the area that needs clarification is will there be any dinners. The only scheduled dinner is during the A Regatta on Sunday, August 11, bar open at 6, dinner at 7. Cost is $30/pp, sign up online at www.oycia.org by the end of this weekend PLEASE.

Dinner will not be served any other time and there are no fees for any of the other activities. We hope you will go in to town and support the restaurants. There is a link to restaurants on the www.oycia.org website under MISCELLANEOUS on the home page (Dining, shopping, amusement). But. . .

Post-Racing Social Program: The bar will be open and Ken's Culinary Creations will be on-site for post-race grilling. Hamburgers, cheeseburgers, Big Fork bacon sausage, pulled pork sandwiches, carne asada and quesadillas will be made fresh and available for purchase for $7.50.

Thursday Nights: Two different bars in downtown Arnolds Park are hosting the sailors, their crew, family and friends during the regatta. You are on your own for dinner. See their flyers with your registration materials.

Class C: Captain's Getaway will host the C Fleet on August 8th with appetizer and drink specials and live music.

Classes E/MC: Murphy's will host the E and MC Fleets on August 15th with drink specials and a DJ.

Blue Wristbands: We are providing blue rubber wristbands to regatta participants, their crew and families. These will be given to you at registration. The wristband is what gets you in to Captain's and Murphy's with no cover and also gets you the appetizer and drink specials. The wristbands were sponsored by two of our local taxi companies, Boji Rides and Harley Rides. Their phone numbers are printed on the wristbands in white. You can make reservations for rides home with them up until midnight. After that, it is first come, first serve for a ride home.

Friday Nights at OYC: Open Bar for club members and regatta participants from 6-9 p.m. at the yacht club. The MC Fleet will host Friday, August 9; the C Fleet will host Friday, August 16. The bar will be open and heavy hors d oeuvres will be provided. There is no charge for this.

Class A:  OYC is hosting a dinner at the club for the A Fleet and anyone else who would like to come. We are calling it "Party in the Cornfields". It will be Sunday, August 11th. The Bar will be open at 6 and dinner will be at 7. Mr. Pork Chop, of RAGBRAI fame, will be coming to the club to grill his famous Iowa Chops. He will also grill sweet corn and provide side salads and homemade pies from the Pie Lady from RAGBRAI. We need to give a head count to Mr. Pork Chop so you will need to register for this dinner by August 3rd. The fee for the dinner is $30.00.

Thanks,

Jacque Schwartz
