Big Inland - It's over until next year

Many thanks to Mendota - Hoofers, Mendota Yacht Club, Madison sponsors, Trey Sprinkman and Darby Smith

With accolades all around, Commodore Trester thanked so many, many volunteers who made this great event happen. The Bilge Pullers Headquarters was never without Mendota volunteers assisting with hospitality, cleanup, assistance and SMILES! Thanks for this inaugural venture with the ILYA to serve our great scow sailors.

To our sponsors ------

Melges/North - You are our forestay. Without your support in financial, manufacturing, knowledge and on-the-water performance, we could not exist. Thanks for competing and making this event so much fun with all your children and wives - it was great fun. And congrats to Harry and Andy for 1-2 in the A fleet.

Capital Brewery - many folks will never be the same. You provided much of the festive spirit we enjoyed. At Governor Nelson and the Pyle Center, you were so generous to show us a great time. The amber was the editor's new favorite. Tom Stitgen, a local MC sailor in Madison is inviting all our clubs to enjoy this local offering. It is a hit in many of WI bars already. How about adding it to your yacht club beers? In the Milwaukee area, it is distributed by CJW, a vendor most of you already utilize.

Old Wisconsin -- most of you know this in your local grocery stores as Buddig meats. The Buddigs sail MC's in Michigan and on Delavan. The "cantina" at the tent site featured Old Wisconsin favorites. Many of you will recall the Buddig Bullseye of many years ago at the Geneva Big Inland. The bright green shirts "marked" the race winners. Thanks for longtime support, Buddigs.

Look at the masthead above to see our other sponsors. Each contributed to make this endeavor possible. Mendota does not have a clubhouse so it takes a generous effort on all fronts to make such a successful event. Thanks to all.

And now. . .  the winners
 A fleet
Melvin, M-21- took home the prize for the first time. In an emotional acceptance speech, Pat Hughes recognized each member of his team for seven years of effort. Of special note is the retirement of Chris Andert who will be moving to Florida this Fall. Chris has been a member of the ILYA Board and his love for the C scow is unparalleled. His online C World will be transitioned this Fall. Chris and Tony Jewett, Skip and Terry Jewett, Rick Kotovic and skipper Pat Hughes were tearfully joyful with the win. Added this year were Harry Melges III and IV.  Congratulations to the M-21 for a victory with strong, strong competitors. They also won the first race.

With one point between first and second and no wind on days 2and 3, the Silverhawk team graciously congratulated Team Melvin. The Silverhawk won the coveted Perrigo Trophy for best combined performance at the Nationals and ILYA Champs. Owner Terry Blanchard is pictured next to Andy Burdick with Jim Petersen, Ben Porter, Peter Keck, Molly Forbes and Joe Kutschenreuter.
Vincent Porter sat at the helm of the Eagle. They won race #3 and third overall. His crew is comprised of Matt Ripkey, Kyle Navin, Hannah Ripkey, Chris Impens, Greg Gifford, owner John Anderson, Ryan Fitzgerald and David Navin. Vincent told of the extraordinary effort of his team when the starboard board developed a malfunction. For an entire leg, Greg Gifford reverse hiked (leaned overboard) and held the board up in the board slot wishing for a tack or finish.
Cosmic Warrior skipper Rob Evans took fourth with Geoff Evans, Mark Christiansen, Matt Hansen, Maclean Potts, Derek Packard and Gavin Potts.
In fifth was the Instigator team of skipper Tom Burton with Jud Dayton, Chris Thompson, Richie Anderson, Pat and Cory Fleming and David Chute.

Second race winner was the Lamphere White Magic Team shown below. Skipper Chuck Lamphere with his team of Jon Just, John Porter, David Porter, Miles Clark, Shannon Harring, Chuck Lamphere, skipper, and Paul Nelson. The A class trophies are simply magnificent. Full results
MC Fleet
Okoboji's Steve Everist Takes Title     Full Results
With a hard, four-race, one-day event, the fleet was tired but happy for the completion of the day. Tipovers were abundant: before, during and at the finish. Ask Kelly Hirn who was just exhausted and tipped after the finish or Stefan Schmidt who was winning a race - "I don't move the same as when I was younger". The participation by youth was impressive. Steve Everist noted his dedication of this event to a young woman who drowned this season on Okoboji. We realize how fortunate we all are to enjoy this sport with our friends.
420 Fleet

Will Crary Takes Inaugural Event    Full results

Like the other fleets, the 420s sailed only on Friday. Six races were sailed. Trophies have been donated for the first and second day of overall racing but Will Crary takes home the first day Garber Trophies only. Hope for more wind next year.
