Buddy Melges (with boat owner John Anderson) sailed the ILYA A Champs at 80 years of age and took the fleet to school. Eight points over 5 races says it all. And the fleet could not have been more appreciative of his efforts. Every award recipient praised Melges for his efforts this regatta but more importantly praised his dedication to the sport, his discipllined approach to racing, his gracious demeanor and generous advice to all who have followed. This was a love fest for the I-1 with a round of applause at each mention of the Melges name and a standing ovation Melges had to speak over to cease the adulation.
Melges family
Here is the entire support  crew for the winning boat. Proud parents, children and grandchildren. The entire front row was filled with little tykes watching the trophy presentation - sailors in their own right competing in the Opti class, champions in the making.

And  the second place Madcap was just as impressive in this most difficult set of races. Tom Freytag sailed an impressive 2-1-11-3-3 to challenge Melges right to the end. "T" won the coveted Perrigo trophy which is presented to the boat with the combined best finishes in the National and Inland championship.
burdickthird
The Silverhawk owned by Terry Blanchard and sailed by Andy Burdick won the last race of the regatta and took the third place trophy.

Fourth place belonged to Rob Evans and teammates.
Portera
The fifth place boat was skippered by Brian Porter with a mix of Minnetonka and Geneva sailors.
