Lynn/ J. Kutschenreuter/V. Porter Take over on Day Two
From Heavy Wind to Light Air - What a Day! Three for each Fleet.
 E Fleet

 Bilge Pullers

The day belonged to Vincent Porter, Sam Rogers and Peter Strothman which resulted in a shakeup of the top ten. The throw out goes into effect tonight with only one race scheduled for tomorrow. Very light air is the prediction.

Here is the photo of the day from the E fleet (Leslie Barkow photo). It's Andy Burdick and Harry Melges REALLY sailing in second place with THIS crew. From left is Andy, Finn, Mya Burdick; then Monroe, Harry III and Harry Melges IV. This is the poster for promoting family sailing.
Results do not include throw out. Race wins belong to Peter Strothman, Vincent Porter of Geneva and Mendota's Emily Green.

Wow, what a promising future for the fleet. Four juniors in the top ten - three from Beulah and one from Okauchee. Joe and George Kutschenreuter along with Christine Porter with the exceptional good fortune to have Annie Haeger on board bring pride to Beulah. Tim Schmidt is keeping even with Dad Stephen. We have two women in the top 15. This is a healthy fleet! Race winners today were Stephen Schmidt, Tiim Schmidt and Joe Kutschenreuter.

 I-20 fleet

Aaron Lynn seems untouchable with one race to go but a great day for Dave Whealon from Fond du Lac with a new boat and daughter Paige as crew. Steve Scheck moves up with the best day in this fleet. Today's race winners sit in 1-2-3.

Keep up to date on the Big Inland

Lake Mendota is the place to be for all scow sailors these next two weekends, and the place to find the most current and up to date status of the event is through the ILYA Big Inland Facebook page. There you'll find the race finishes as they occur, the most recent ScowLines, and be able to connect with your fellow sailors around Madison.

What Does that Race Committee Do?

The day begins at the hotel checking multiple weather sites.
Arrive at the site 1.5 hours ahead.
Leave pier 1.25 hours SHARP before scheduled warning signal
Monitor wind readings again and again and again. Timer checks signalling equipment, flags and reviews procedure even if its second or third day.
Then it's the race. --- while the spectators are enjoying, RC is re-evaluating wind, resetting marks, preparing for changes, making last minute calls for the best courses possible.-- Again checking weather sites, confer with other fleet RCs for impending changes as wind moves over the host lake. Smartphones, iPads, TackTicks, GPS units, GPS timing - it's all utilized. Pulling buoys at record breaking speed is the norm to give the sailors the best courses.
The mark roundings are recorded. Finishes are recorded by three personnel and tape recorded. Video recording in addition on the E course. Then pictures of the results via SmartPhones or iPads emailed to the scorer who is across the lake. Thanks to Bill Shelton for keeping all the records. Above is Julie Haeger holding the race results in shadow-free, vibration-free mode for transmission to Shelton.

And then with all that high tech -- Can't hear the radio with the wind static? Use on old fashioned ziplock bag to enclose the handheld radio and transmission is clear.

And that's how it's done. Thanks to Chip Mann, Larry Krause, and Mark DeGuire as PROs and their regular crews. Practice makes perfect and these teams work together regatta after regatta year after year to give the sailors the consistency of performance. Thanks to the sailors for providing us with new challenges and opportunities to learn with each event.
THE ILYA NEEDS YOU
Bilge Pullers  Help us with our sailors at home
Do you love "live" action? Are you on the racecourse? Do you own a smartphone? And, of course, you are on facebook. Please consider serving as a course reporter.

Bilge PullersHere's how it works.  Go watch your sailor on this great lake. But BEFORE you leave home -

  • 1 - copy the logo on the left of your favorite fleet.
  • 2 - Make this your facebook profile picture. This makes it easy for the folks at home to follow a favorite fleet. When you post, the fleet emblem will appear next to your name.

3 - At the event, enjoy the race

4 -  Use your smartphone or iPad to record the roundings (top five are five), mishaps, great moments.

5 - Post to the ILYA BIG Inland facebook page (go to your facebook page, search for ILYA BIG Inland and you are there).

6 - Thanks for being a correspondent - thanks for enjoying the regatta - thanks for supporting the ILYA and enjoying Mendota
