Haeger and Provancha Take Sole American Medal at ISAF event in Spain --- on to France

   Team HP in Spain

Winning two races, Annie Haeger (Beulah) and Briana Provancha captured the bronze medal at the Princesa Sofia Cup which concluded Saturday. While five American teams made it to the medal round, the 470 #1712 was the only US team on the podium. The team had a rough start tearing a spinnaker suffering a DNC in race #1 but they improved daily with a combination of 2-4-1-5 that wowed the crowd. They moved into the medal round along with their American sailing partners and then won medal race #1 to continue to move up in the standings. This pair travels to France next for a smaller event and then the next ISAF regatta at Hyeres, France.   For an interview with the medalists, click here.
Gordy Lamphere in the tough Finn class finished 44th and Erik Bowers was 82nd in the Laser class.
C Fleet Boasts Manufacture of 12 New Boats
Randy hiking  Fleet Takes Charge of New Sales
Who won the C Inland last year? Randy Schmidt of Lake Beulah is an enthusiastic guy! Talk to his patients (yes, he is the kindest MD you will meet), his fellow sailors (who throws himself nearly out of the boat upon winning the Inland - see pic right - or who has tears in his eyes even today recalling that day?) or his children who now sail every weekend. His daughter Riley, fresh from the X fleet, will enjoy her own C boat in a tough 27-boat fleet on Beulah while Dad stepped up with other new boat owners to collaborate with Melges to re-invigorate the C. A small cadre of sailors performed boat testing, mast testing and HERE COMES THE NEW C! In this era of strict one-design manufacturing, the fleet knew it was time to act as a spark plug to spur new boat sales. So 12 is the number!
And here is his new baby! Beulah boasts four of the new boats.

ILYA Nominates Potential Inductees

The ILYA has submitted several nominations for consideration to this year's class of induction to the NSHOF. This process is most comprehensive and, surprisingly, personal. The official deadline for written submission was April 1. The ILYA is always proud to promote the efforts of our own fine sailors so an effort was made to bring our renowned sailors forward for consideration. But. . .  once the written nomination was complete, the process was far from over.

It was 7:30 AM Saturday morning when all forces were applied to provide the NSHOF with support material for our nominations. The NSHOF has two employees who edit the submitted material, augment it with personal quotes and anecdotes, and submit it to the selection committee. This certainly provides a more similar set of materials for each candidate's review.
The process was most thorough with an amazing commitment on the part of the NSHOF to provide the necessary history warranted for a nomination to this prestigious institution. From this personal experience, the editor realizes the good fortune we enjoy, the rich heritage we cherish, the fine individuals we celebrate.
The editor was responsible for one of the nominations (the ILYA Promotion Committee has accepted the charge to annually submit nominations for national awards). The journey to completion included a phone call by NSHOF to Buddy Melges (this was at least his second request for recommendation for this year's candidates), the editor's interview with a crew from over 50 years ago which prompted a most endearing trip down memory lane for the crew, solicitation of three other submissions of personal stories - all within an 8 hour period. By Saturday dinner, all possible efforts were filed with the NSHOF.
We will await announcement of the 2013 inductees with anticipation. An appreciation of the process makes the editor respect the scrutiny applied for the small number of sailors bestowed with the honor of selection.
Okoboji Commits to Kattack Coverage
Okoboji logo
  • 2013 Sailboat Race Tracking System -
  • PAST - you had to be physically on the water - in real time - and had to guess boat speed and sailing angles.

  • New For 2013 - A new computerized system will display live and "after racing" the location and boat speed for all equipped competitors.

Kattack is designed to provide a visual and metric analysis of the sailboat performance Using the powers of GPS and SmartPhone technologies, racing is captured, recorded, and presented Live on the internet. Okoboji joins Beulah, Minnetonka, Oshkosh, Geneva and Cedar, WI with ownership of the units. The system will enrich your experience both on the water and at home.

Come to 'Boji and return home to watch yourself against your competitors. It's only one more reason to "Take it to 'Boji"
