Sails for Haiti
Skip Johnson asks you to donate by May 25th
A famous name from the past -- Skip Johnson, from the former Johnson Boat Works in White Bear Minnesota -- encourages ILYA sailors to get rid of those old sails in the attic and help out the fishermen in Haiti. Skip's friend Bob and his wife in Bonita Springs, Florida, run a charity there, and part of the outreach is providing aid to orphanages to Haiti and the Bahamas. On their last trip to Haiti in December many fisherman told them of their need for sailcloth and line for their fishing boats--no sails, no fish, no food, Skip and Bob are hoping that some ILYA members would have used sails and line that they would donate to this cause. The blog of Bob's voyages can be found at www.schoonerstarofthesea.blogspot.com
It doesn't matter the condition of the items, these guys can make anything work! The ministry website is www.mysuperkidsclub.org if you would like to learn more about it. Thank You. The sails should arrive by May 25th. Bob can load 20 tons at a time so number of sails is not an issue. For more info, call  Captain Bob at 239-248-0647.
Women's Conference - May 14 - Milwaukee CSC

Midwest Women's Sailing Conference   8:00 A.M., May 14, 2011

Located at the Milwaukee Community Sailing Center   www.sailingcenter.org

1450 N. Lincoln Memorial Drive, Milwaukee, WI

The conference fee $125 and includes classes, meals and a reception.  The conference is limited to 100 participants.  For more information contact Phyllis McDonald at 414-530-6528 or email her at womenssailingconf@gmail.com

The inaugural Conference will be a full day of workshops and speakers covering topics of seamanship with special emphasis on women's interest and participation in the sport of sailing. This concentrated event will give women an efficient and effective way to get started or to improve their boating skills.  Even experienced Skippers will find something of interest. Starting at 8:00 a.m. we will have a continental breakfast and the keynote address from internationally acclaimed sailor and author Dawn Riley. www.dawnriley.com

Our day will be divided into morning and afternoon workshop sessions with a brief break for lunch. We will have a selection of workshops covering a range of topics. Attendee's will choose from 5 selections per time slot.  For a description of available classes and registration materials contact MWWSC via email. womenssailingconf@gmail.com

The multi workshop format is modeled after the very successful Southern California Yachting Association's Women's Sailing Convention.  We are indebted to founder and director Gale Hine for her guidance and encouragement.  http://wsscya.scyaweb.org/ Inland sailor Kathy Weishampel approached Milwaukee Community Sailing Center and then Milwaukee Bay Women's Sailing Organization and found volunteers willing to do the work required to make the event a reality.  Her interview in Sailing Magazine was our first publicity.  That article brought inquiries from as far away as Alum Creek, Ohio.

"I am elated" said Midwest Women's Sailing Conference President Cookie Mueller upon hearing of the solid response to the Save the Day Card distribute around Milwaukee Bay and Strictly Sail in Chicago.  "We are trying to involve women sailors of all skill levels."  "Many members of the Milwaukee Bay Women's Sailing Organization have stepped up to organize, instruct and participate in the conference" Fleet Captain Fran Aring said.  "We need to link together more women sailors to make our fleet grow."   www.mbwso.org
