USODA Team Trials

teamtrialslogoRacing begins May 1

Pewaukee piers are in, sailors are practicing already- whew, it's here. 193 Opti sailors will descend on Pewaukee in the next week for the opportunity to compete for positions on the United States Optimist Dinghy Association's Team Trials. Some 50 sailors will leave with assignments to teams who travel to Asia, Europe and North America for international Optimist events. Our local sailors are Alex Keck, Carson Heinze, Henry Chapman of Nagawicka; Alec Bischoff and Robbie Lindemann of Pine; Patrick Schmidt of Beulah;  JP Friend, Joey Biwer and Christian Spencer of Pewaukee, Nathan Olmstead of Minnetonka and Chapman Petersen, Parker Michel and Will Davies of Geneva. Sailors from 23 states will compete May 1-5. The RC is primarily ILYA with the exception of the PRO, Means Davis, and John Strassman from Milwaukee. Our local officials are happy to serve. Come out to watch. Pewaukee will have its grill open all day to accommodate parents and spectators. Note - no spectator boats will be launched from the club during this regatta to allow for the over 200 boats in attendance, including coach boats. No parking at the club - watch for signs near the church for parking availability. Thanks to our many sailing schools who allowed their boats to be chartered for coach boats.

Our '16 Olympic Hopefuls Move on to Hyeres, France

The last ISAF event of the season starts today. With over 800 sailors competing, this will be tough competition for our young sailors. Haeger and Provancha attended a smaller event last week and finished as the top female team and fifth overall in the 470. The ISAF website takes you to the event.

Cedar, Indiana - Can it be any more fun?
   Facebook Frenzy
This is a marketing bonanza! Have you been following the Icebreaker Regatta Facebook page? It jars your memory; it makes you laugh; it has you asking your family questions about the "ol' days". What could be better for a fleet? Here's the answer - the members of Cedar, Indiana, have donated sufficient funds to make this a free event for youth. From Facebook -
"Here it is folks...Can you believe, thanks to all the valiant fundraising efforts by Cedar Lake's members, all REGISTRATION FEES, ALL MEALS (FOR NOT ONLY THE SKIPPER BUT THE CREW AND THIRD TOO) ARE FREE***that's right FREE***FREE for Junior... sailors under the age of 25! That is an out right GRAND gesture!"

Cedar, Wisconsin - Spring C and MC

Ready to start your season with a unique regatta experience? The Cedar Spring Regatta offers many short races rather than a few long races. Similar to college sailing racing, this regatta will have you completing more starts and close boat handling than you could ever ask for. Still not convinced? Andy Burdick is planning to be at the event as a coach and observer.  There will be post race discussions on tuning, tactics, and boat handling for both C's and MC's. Find the NOR HERE and register online HERE. Join us at Cedar Lake (in Wisconsin) for a great tune-up event.

Hope all of you will be able to attend the preseason regatta. It will be an outstanding opportunity to have Andy give us pointers and improve our sailing. Hope to see you there.

X, Opti, and Laser May Madness

This year on May 11th and 12th Pewaukee will invite X, Opti and Laser youth sailors to its annual May Madness regatta.  The high school 420 teams will race on a separate course, but it will give ILYA youth sailors a chance to check out high school sailing as well.  X boaters, Opti sailors and any Laser (radial or full  - sailor still in high school or younger) is invited to attend.  If you're coming from up north - contact regatta chair to have your boat stay in Wisconsin and come down again the following weekend for the LaBelle Tune-up!  The NOR will be published shortly and the registration can be found here:  Come and see what May Madness is all about!

Want to try a Laser?
Dave Abbott will assist you with the loan of a Laser as supplies last. Contact Dave Abbott if you are interested in a boat to trial. This is a great chance to try the most popular singlehanded boat in the nation. FYI - there is a change in the production of the Laser. Due to some problems with royalties, the original designer of the Laser, Bruce Kirby, will be manufacturing boats or approving the manufacture of boats which will look like the Laser but currently will be named the Torch. Watch for more details as the story unfolds. Same boat, new name.
Sailing School Directors - Listen Up!
   The next step for 420s
The next step for our young sailors after the Opti and X boats is the C420!  The ILYA has sanctioned the fleet, now we need to grow it!  The 420 is the boat sailed in High School and College and the C420 is the logical next step for our young sailors in the ILYA!   Sailing does not end at 16!  We are looking to expand the ILYA C420 summer sailing program across the ILYA and need your help.

Please join us for a C420 Meeting on Saturday May 11th during the Lunch Break of the May Madness Regatta at Pewaukee Yacht Club .Come see how Pewaukee Lake Sailing School has successfully built a thriving C420 program and help your lake grow yours!
This will be an informational session and brainstorming to get ideas and commitments on growing our young fleets!Information about building fleets and acquiring boats will be available.
Mark your calendars and bring your lunch to Pewaukee Yacht Club  Saturday, May 11th.
