Lamphere Wins Finn US Nationals
Fairhope, AL
Lake Geneva's Gordon Lamphere took the fleet by storm this weekend. With a total of 10 points in 7 races, he was a threat from the beginning with a starting day of 1-1-1. Lamphere is actively campaigning for the US and seems to be continent-jumping. He was most recently in Palma, Spain but returned to the US for Nationals. With a boat here and a boat in Europe, you can readily see the commitment of our young sailors. Gordy is a graduate of St. Mary's and is on hold from law school while he pursues everyone's dream of full-time sailing. He remains a member of the US team supported by Sperry during the preparatory years for the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Sally Barkow honored at Milwaukee Community Sailing Center
Augie Barkow Accepts Award

Sally was first American named to the all-female Team SCA crew that will compete in the 2014-15 Volvo Ocean Race. Team SCA is preparing for its first trans-Atlantic trip in May. To follow the team, go to TEAM SCA on Facebook and watch the preparation (land and water, maintenance on the boat, training, crew features).

PHILADELPHIA, March 31, 2014 - Sally Barkow of Nashotah, Wis., was honored as an International Champion by the Milwaukee Community Sailing Center at its annual Spring Splash Celebration of Champions, held Saturday, March 29, at the Harken headquarters in Pewaukee, Wis.

Barkow is part of an 11-woman crew that will compete in the prestigious 2014/15 Volvo Ocean Race, a grueling nine-month global competition that begins this October in Spain, ends in June in Sweden, and covers nearly 39,000 nautical miles. Team SCA, a crew of top international female sailors, is sponsored by SCA, a leading global hygiene and forest products company, based in Sweden with operations in Neenah and Menasha, Wis. SCA was the major sponsor of the Spring Splash event.

Barkow and her teammates are presently training for the race in the Canary Islands.

Her brother, Augie Barkow, accepted the award on her behalf Saturday and introduced a video acceptance video by his sister that included a virtual tour of the Team SCA boat. Her parents, Dick and Leslie Barkow, were also among the 240 guests at the event, which raises money to support the Milwaukee Community Sailing Center and its outreach programs.

We are pleased to support this event and its recognition of Sally's achievement at being selected for the elite crew of Team SCA," said Amy Bellcourt, VP Communications, SCA in the Americas.  "SCA is proud of Sally and the other exceptionally strong women who have joined together to form Team SCA. Their participation in the Volvo Ocean Race aligns strongly with a key focus of our company - respect for nature. In addition, Team SCA underscores our connection with our consumers worldwide, 80 percent of whom are women."

In addition to Barkow, other honorees included select UW-Madison and Marquette University sailors - each awarded a Midwest Collegiate Sailing Association (MCSA) All Conference Team Award for exceptional performance during the 2013 season. Pewaukee-native John Ruf, singlehanded-class winner at the 2013 U.S. Disabled Sailing Championship hosted at MCSC last fall, was also honored.

ILYA Women's/Girls Clinic - June 19-20
New event to keep your classes strong
. . . Empower girls and young women with confidence through the sport of sailing & support breast cancer research

New Sponsor
We are pleased to announce NewStudio Architecture will join
The Windhover Foundation and the ILYA Promotion Committee in sponsoring our first ever Sail Strong, Sail Pink.
As sailors out of the White Bear Yacht Club, business owners, and, myself, as a two-time breast cancer survivor, I'm writing you today to let you know that my husband, Sean, and I would like our company, NewStudio Architecture, to be a sponsor of the 2014 ILYA Women's Clinic at the Gold level. -- Melissa Martyr
 Thank you!
Annie Kate Haeger is returning home from Europe early to teach at this clinic.

Stephanie Roble is returning from her active sailing schedule to teach. Two All-Americans, two world-ranked young women. How can you miss this? We have our first adult sailor registered for the C scow. We can accept 5 more C sailors and 6 MC sailors. Don't be left out.

 How can you participate?

1 - Join us for the actual clinic or join us for Thursday night's banquet. Both registrations are accepted by mail or online at LBYC. Look for the June dates.

2 - Support only the breast cancer research portion, if you like.

3 - Please look at your club's membership. Is there a youth you would like to encourage, recommend, support?

4 - Simply provide sponsorship support or PINK softgoods for our first clinic. The intention is to rotate this event as club's submit bids. PLEASE CONSIDER FINANCIAL OR CORPORATE SUPPORT OF THE EVENT. SEE THE BROCHURE FOR INFORMATION ON THE DEMOGRAPHICS OF THE SAILING COMMUNITY TO DETERMINE OUR SUITABILITY AND OUR REACH FOR YOUR INTERESTS. Or give because you believe in women in sailing in the ILYA.

5 - Alter your sailing school/weekday racing schedule now to allow your girls to attend this event.
