This weekend, I had the honor of presenting the Huse Sportsmanship Trophy to one of our youth members, Jackson Walker. During this unconventional season of award presentations, the ILYA Executive Committee took advantage of a pre-scheduled MISSA 420 regatta opportunity at Pewaukee Yacht Club when the recipient and his parents would be participating to present the award. As the sailors gathered for what they thought was an ordinary skipper's meeting, little did they know that one among them would be honored for his hero-like work. 

Jackson was truly taken back by the honor and award presentation which says so much about him. Humility describes Jackson. Humility in accepting the award and humility in making the decisions to help others. As the ILYA continues to move forward to meet the needs of our next generation of members, we can rest assured to know that we are poised to have leaders such as Jackson Walker.  

In 2019, the inaugural recipient of the ILYA Huse Sportsmanship Trophy was Gloria Melges.   Gloria and Buddy both signed an ILYA burgee which was given to Jackson.  Jackson was also asked to sign it and it will continue to be passed forward along with the trophy.  Another ILYA tradition has begun.  Please click the video link above to watch the  presentation and to learn about what Jackson did to merit this award.
