SPORTSMANSHIP AT ITS BEST
|
|
Editor's note
This weekend's weather brought added stress to the Laser mast of the leader in the Midwest Qualifier for Women's Collegiate Singlehanded Nationals. The upper mast section broke rendering the then-leader out of contention for the entire Sunday's planned five races. Sailing upwind in second place for the race (but out of contention for qualifying), Geneva's Meg Six turned downwind and demanded the leader take her boat for the remainder of the day. Michigan State's Lauren Knowles completed the day's racing to obtain a qualifying position.
Add to that the father of the "then" second place University of Wisconsin sailor and the father of the "then" third place University of Minnesota sailor who both immediately ran to the parking lot to obtain another mast section to be taken out to the water for Lauren to use ----- it's Inland sportsmanship at its best.
Thanks to Megan Six, David Porter and Mark Prange for placing the sport of sailing over individual gain. The event concluded with Porter and Knowles qualifying for the third straight year. They, along with Boston College's Anne Kate Haeger (current singlehanded national champ), will travel to Corpus Christi for the national championship.

| MATCH KOHLER'S PLEDGE - HELP THE BADGERS PLAN THE BUDGET |
|
TERRY KOHLER GIVES UW $5000
UW alum or supporters, please consider a donation, large or small, to the UW Sailing Team for the 2010 Collegiate Nationals. Terry Kohler, of North Sails, has offered to match the first $5000 for the event. The caveat is the funds need to be raised this year. If your club has generously offered to fundraise for a sail to complete the mandatory 18, please consider collecting your pledges to allow the team to take advantage of the Kohler offer. It's as though your donation counts double.
Breaking news ---Harken and others make new boats a possibility. ---- due to added support, the team may be able to secure new boats for the event thanks to a local club who is interested in six boats and a reduction of the price of the boats with resale, sails donations and assistance from Harken.
Deadlines are nearing for the team to make a decision. The order for boats is due November 1. If you are an alum and would like to assist the UW team or the local youth via resale of the 12 UW-owned boats ---- donate NOW!
What a great start to the fundraising required to host the Collegiate Nationals in May-June. Please send your donation, large or small, to UW Foundation, c/o Collegiate Sailing Nationals, 800 Langdon, Madison, WI 53706.

C-O-L-D!!!
170 sailors braved the weather on Lake Michigan this weekend for the Midwest Champs. The event was hopeful for the local team as Malcolm Lamphere started Saturday's racing with a 1-1-1 only to have race #2 eliminated due to RC error on the B division of race 2. The fleet was broken into four color-coded fleets and each race consisted of two divisions. Lamphere ended up a respectable seventh in a tough three days of racing. Ben Garber was 28th. Click here for final resultswhich includes other local sailors. Local support included Chip Mann and Scot Banholzer on RC and Candace Porter on measurement Friday and Saturday.
