World-Class Sailors to Race on Gull Lake
National and world-class sailors will compete with sailors from a five-state area as the Gull Lake Yacht Club, located in north central Minnesota, again hosts the annual E-Scow Invitational of the Inland Lakes Yachting Association (ILYA), July 12-15, 2012. More than 50 E-scow sailboats, including some of the nation's top one-design sailors, are expected to participate in five races on Gull Lake during the three-day event. This year's Gull Lake event marks the third E-Scow Invitational (1998 & 2003) hosted by Gull Lake Yacht Club.
"We're truly delighted to welcome this major regional sailing competition back to Gull Lake," said Steve Sullivan, regatta organizer and commodore of the Gull Lake Yacht Club. When the E fleet raced here before, they discovered what we Minnesota sailors have known for a long time: that Gull Lake provides a world-class inland lake sailing venue for major competitive sailing." The regatta is open to boats of the E Scow Class. The skipper must be a family, regular, youth or life member of the ILYA at the time of registration. Crew members become members of the ILYA by virtue of the yacht's completed registration. ILYA Member Club requirements apply.
The entry is free for skippers sailing their first ILYA Adult Class Regatta, and who contact the ILYA office and register prior to or on the early registration deadline (June 30). A 50% youth-aged skipper discount is available to qualifying skippers who register prior to or on the early registration deadline (June 30). Registration fee incentives do not apply to on-site registrations. There will be a Competitors' Briefing on Friday, July 13, at 8:30 a.m. at the GLYC Clubhouse. Coffee and rolls will be available. Race Schedule: Six to eight races are scheduled. The first race is scheduled for a 10:00 a.m. warning signal on Friday, July 13. Except when races are sailed back to back, the approximate time of the warning signal for subsequent races will be posted. If two races are completed, no warning signal will be made after 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 15. In any case, no warning signal will be made after 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 15.
Trophies will be awarded to the top 10 skipper's and crew. The champion skipper is awarded the Jule Hannaford Trophy, an ILYA perpetual trophy given each year in memory of its namesake. Trophies will be presented following haul-out after the last race on Sunday. The Gull Lake Yacht Club is also home of the Gull Lake Sailing School, a nonprofit sailing organization that has been teaching children and adults to sail for more than 50 years.
