This week was a tuneup for the local boats as the C fleet prepares for Nationals next weekend. Twenty-nine sailors traveled to Delavan for the MIR C. Next week the sailors return to Delavan for C Nationals. It may be hard to predict the winner, but the participation award may have to go to the perennial Team Road Warrior club Beulah who sent 12 sailors to the MIR tuneup. Results:

Okauchee hoted a successful 420 clinic Memorial day weekend, Calhoun hosts a clinic this weekend. Get ready for the 420 Youth Champs at Mendota.

Capitol Brewing is our beer sponsor. They will be supplying free beer for the event. Capitol Brewing is a Madison Wisconsin microbrewery specializing in a variety of seasonal specialty beers. We will be raffling a brand new North Z-max sail. The raffle will be the last day of the event.

Our regatta will be a Sailors For the Sea Clean regatta. We are all competitors to bring reusable water bottles. We will not be handing out disposable water bottles during this event. We are encouraging all participants to use biodegradable cleaner on their boats and no boats will be allowed to be cleaner where the dirty water can runoff into the lake. DEEPHAVEN, Minn. (June 08, 2012) - Lake Minnetonka Sailing School is hosting, and Minnetonka Yacht Club is a major sponsor, of the 2012 U.S. Junior Women's Doublehanded Championship for the Ida Lewis Trophy, a US Sailing National Championship event. The event runs from June 24-30 on Lake Minnetonka. 

The U.S. Junior Women's Double-handed Championship for the Ida Lewis Trophy was started in 1995 and became a US Sailing National Championship in 1996.  This premier event and the coaching clinics are made possible by funds provided by host clubs, local host families, generous sponsors and by the late C. Thomas Clagett, Jr.  Mr. Clagett's unwavering dedication to junior women's sailing is in memory of his late wife, Nancy Leiter Clagett, a world class sailor, and of Ida Lewis, the heroic daughter of a lighthouse keeper.

The event is sailed in Club 420 class sailboats and is intended to encourage young American women to enhance their sailing ability.  It has a strong emphasis on sportsmanship and provides the opportunity to compete in elite-level competition with guidance from high-level coaching.  The national championship will be sailed by 40 teams of young women (80 total athletes) from around the country (17 teams from CA!). The local ILYA young women sailors competing are: Kate Cox/Rosie Hust, Annika Ekholm/Caitlin McGoldrick, Addy Ferguson/Sarah Hogg, Mary Claire Kiernan/Kelly Monahan, Kate Klement/Teresa Westin, Isabella Loosbrock/Madeleine Loosbrock and Amelia Shankwitz/Susie Voltz.   

The weeklong agenda consists of two days of clinics for the competing sailors led by US Sailing with a team of distinguished junior and college sailing coaches, followed by the three day National Championship regatta.  While visiting Minnesota, all competitors will be housed by local host families.  All meals as well as activities and social events are being planned and coordinated by Lake Minnetonka Sailing School volunteers.

Championship Notes: The U.S. Junior Women's Doublehanded Championship is an open event...Competitors are between the ages 13 and 18... A total of 10 races are scheduled. Three races must be completed to constitute a complete championship. When fewer than six races have been completed, a boat's series score will be the total of her race scores. When six or more races have been completed, a boat's series score will be the total of her race scores excluding her worst score... Racing begins each day at 10:30 a.m. CT (subject to change)... Trophies will be awarded to the skippers and crew finishing in the top three places. US Sailing medals will be presented to the top five finishing teams. The C. Thomas Clagett Sportsmanship Award will be awarded to a team based on the results of the competitors' secret ballot.

Farallones Review Panel Updates
A US Sailing Independent Review Panel has released a set of preliminary recommendations from the research conducted on the 2012 Crewed Farallones Race that resulted in the deaths of five sailors from sailboat, Low Speed Chase, on April 14, 2012. The panel presented this information to the new San Francisco Bay Offshore Racing Council, who have enhanced safety and communications practices for all upcoming offshore events in the Bay area.

Head Coach for the Clinic: Kevin Jewett

Kevin grew up sailing on Lake Minnetonka. He attended St. Mary's College of MD where he earned two time All-American status in Collegiate Sailing and was the team captain.  An ILYA Champion in the M-16, Kevin has competed successfully in all of the scow classes with National Championship title as tactician on the A, and multiple E and C Scow regatta titles to his credit.  Olympic Campaigns in the IMCO Windsurfing Class and 49er have sharpened his skills outside of the ILYA.  Kevin has served as the Director of the Geneva Lake Sailing School since 2008 and was head racing coach for Lake Calhoun Sailing School in the mid 90's when their racing program was in its formative years.  He has a passion for teaching the sport and enjoys working with sailors of all levels

There will also be 2 assistant coaches to set a target of 8-1 boat to coach ratio.

Goal:

This clinic will focus on the kids who race in high school events in the spring and fall transition into the club 420 events in the summer. This will also help the kids who have been sailing the club 420 for a few years get more comfortable in the boat with the spinnaker and trapeze.
