FIREWORKS, FLAGS AND FRIENDS AT PYC |

An estimated 250 people lined the entrance to
Pewaukee Yacht Club along a US flag-lined road. Nearly fifty children waited
for local hero John Ruf waving flags at every van who arrived to join the
celebration. The adults were located from the road to the bar. When Ruf finally
arrived, the Spencer nephews led the charge of youngsters rushing the van
to welcome Ruf. As father Fritz reassembled the wheelchair and John transfered
into his vehicle, Todd Haines started singing the national anthem with the
crowd, every voice, joining in. Fireworks boomed over the lake. Ruf rolled
through the crowd with hands extended to shake Ruf's hand. This was goosebump
poignancy that is rarely duplicated. Only at Pewaukee! Hugs, well wishes,
and a real lovefest for Ruf. Congrats, John, on your return home.
In my brief visit with John, he noted he followed none of the publicity
from the ILYA, Milwaukee Journal or US Sailing. He has a treasure in store
with no superstitions to impede his joy. He said his pride watching the US
flag arise during the medal ceremony was indescribable. His smile was without
words.
