| BILL MATTISON RETIRES WITH RESPECT AND MEMORIES FROM HIS A FLEET FRIENDS |
| | Thirty years of A Sailing
Submitted by Steve Holtzman
After
campaigning an A-Scow since the early 80s, Bill Mattison just completed
his last regatta just two weeks after celebrating his 80th birthday.
During that time, dozens of people got to experience the thrill of
racing an A-Scow on the boat he co-owns with Lon Schoor. More
importantly, hundreds of people benefitted from his example of the best
in sportsmanship, knowing there's more to racing than winning and
always ready to lend a helping hand when a boat needed repairs.
Just
one thing I remember was his fixing the mast V-8 busted at Geneva's Big
Inland during a crane accident. When expertly putting the broken spar
back together, I asked why he did all that work at no charge. He
simply said that it was for the good of the fleet. And, how many guys
will rebuild the boat of a competitor at no charge to elevate the level
of competition? He sets an impeccable example for future generations
of sailors on how to reach beyond excellence in sailing to, more
importantly, being an all around great guy. As this living legend
steps back from competition, our organization will always benefit if we
continue to be guided by his high standards for sportsmanship on and
off the race course.

Lake Harriet Die Hard
Minnesota
X boaters keep going and going. A little early practice for next year's
Gull Lake Champs. Lake Harriet in the Twin Cities hosted MCs, Cs, M-16s
and X boats at the annual Die Hard event. Eddie Cox took top honors
with Alex Dreissen in second. Andy Kruse from White Bear topped Bill
Colburn in MCs. Dave Ginsberg was the top C and Jack Zimmerscheid
bested six other M-16s. Click here for full results.
C Blue Chip
Augie Barkow has returned to the C fleet after a summer off with
weddings and sisters (ah, the Olympics). But . . . he's baaaaack.
Chris Pinahs was second, Kent Haeger in third, Mystery Guest Mike
Ingham in fourth and Fred Barkow in fifth. |
| BEULAH CHALLENGE |
| | FREE HOUSING, FREE BEER - WHAT MORE DO C BOATERS WANT?
For
the second year, Lake Beulah invites C sailors for a fall wingding.
Last year we saw sailors from the deep South (Springfield, IL) travel
to the cold north (promised temps in the 70's this year) to challenge
the local club. The local club had the best first-year skipper, Randy
Schmidt, but this year it could be you. While this is a championship
caliber event, the idea of the Beulah Challenge grew from the desire of
the fleet to promote less experienced skippers. From driving into the
lot to you leave, the C fleet wants to make this an event to encourage
C sailing. There is a special award for early year skippers.
Dinner
Friday night is margaritas with enchiladas, Saturday night's meal is
Julie Haeger's Italian flank steak and Anne Porter Muller's tiramisu.
Lunches are just plain good. The first 1/4 barrels of the day are free.
And housing is free. Contact Brian Brickler for housing.
Lake Beulah is between Pewaukee and Geneva. Contact Anne Muller for more details
