WHAT HAPPENS IN BOJI? |
|
Who
doesn't have a story to tell about Okoboji? Whether a youth or adult
sailor, it is tough to find somone who can't relate a story about
Arnold's Park or the rowdy go-karts. Sadly the go-karts are gone
(Undoubtedly one of our sailors shut them down - just ask about the
records - "it only took me ??? seconds to get kicked out) but bumper
cars still live. Phil Petersen and his gang have only fun planned for
all of us.
NEWS
FLASH - as your editor types this, an email from Petersen arrived
stating the Go-Karts are back but in the amusement park with better
track and faster cars. The Inland can live!! But will dads? An
opportunity for new legends to be made.
On
top of the fun, Okoboji has some housing left. ILYA Treasurer Rick
Trester has it all figured out for those select few of you who contact
Okoboji Housing chair Kristy Moen now.
"One of the biggest expenses of going to a regatta is hotel costs.
Okoboji is offering free housing to a limited number of registrants of
all fleets. Staying at a hotel in Okoboji for three nights will cost
you at least $250.00. From Southeast Wisconsin to Okoboji is about 400
miles. This means even at 15 miles per gallon you can drive to the
regatta on your housing savings and still be money ahead. Take this
savings and put it in your gas tank and come to one of the best sailing
venues in the Midwest."
This
is a venue that cannot be missed. The clubhouse, the congeniality of
the 'Boji members, the opportunity to purchase a University of
Okoboji sweatshirt (is there a university), the best chocolate candy
house around (you men don't know that, do you?) and more. This is a
tourist town set up to greet you and provide you with memories. This is
the perfect family regatta. If you have not considered the Champs, it's
time for a family meeting. Your wife and children will fall in love
with the town.

| KATTACK - COMPUTERIZED RACING |
| |
 Have
you seen the computerized representation of your last race? The Kattack
system allows you to visualize your every tack and jibe. The system is
seen at most A One Design regattas, at Lake Geneva where their X
boaters train with the system and now Lake Beulah is negotiating for
her sailors to purchase the GPS units while a generous two sailors will
donate the software. Are you interested in joining the group of elite
sailors who utilize this training system? The National C organization
is considering a purchase to be used as a promotional tool at the
smaller, local events where the numbers are more manageable. Watch for
more details to be a member of this exclusive club of Kattack sailors.
Our region is trying to establish a means to share the systems at our
regattas to promote improved sailing and our classes. |

| REGATTA RESULTS |
| GLSS X
 Sixty-four X
teams competed in a five-race windy event on Lake Geneva. Local talent
won out with four Geneva teams in the top ten. Davis and RJ Porter took
top prize beating out George Kutschenreuter (TRAP and Quad winner this
year) and John Barr. Beulah had three teams in the top ten as brothers
Andy and Chris Colombe with crews Neal Klement and Drew Komas took 7th
and 10th. There were five ILYA Champs in the field of top five as
Connor Trepton with Parker Trepton (LaBelle) ended 3rd, Robbie Allen
with Johnny Ferguson (Minnetonka) took fourth and Nicholas and Madelyn
Clemence (Pewaukee) ended fifth. Michael and Mitchell Lee (runnersup in
the ILYA champs the last two years and last year's GLSS champ) were 6th
and Charlie Morris with Max Six (Geneva and also a top contender last
year in the junior ILYA X Champs) was 9th. Perhaps the crowd favorite
was Joe and Griffin Rolander who won two races but had a tale to
remember on race 5. He was OCS, got caught on the committee boat,
somehow tangled his boat in the cannon and caused a second shot to
engage. Now not everyone can accomplish that! Rolander's finishes were
5-14-1-1-38. Look for tough competition at this year's ILYA Champs!
GLSS was a prelim to continued great X boat racing in the ILYA.
GLSS Opti
Twenty-six Green Fleeters and sixty-seven RWB
sailors took to Lake Geneva for a one-day Opti event. The top ten was a
geography lesson with FL, IL, WI sailors galore. Winner was FL sailor
Erika Reineke, Hunter Johnstone was 2nd, Drake Lyon in 3rd,
Carson Crain in 4th, Parker Trepton 5th, Malcolm Lamphere 6th,
Christopher Williford 7th, Addy Ferguson 8th, Trevor Trepton 9th and
Eddie Cox in tenth. Most of these names are new to us in the Midwest.
The sailors return to Lake Geneva on Thu-Fri for the USODA Midwest
Champs which serves as a qualifier to the US Team Trials regatta.
The Green fleet was won by Delavan sailor Allison Marozza who beat
her sister Angela who was 4th. Pewaukee sailors Lizzy Friend (2nd),
David Winquist (3rd), Claire Feichtmeier (6th) and Taylor Just in 8th
had a strong showing. Rounding out the top ten were Nick Vadnais in
5th, Donald O'Sullivan in 7th with a nice bump on the head from a boom
attack 10 feet from the finish which resulted in a 5th place finish
rather than a 2nd, Mac Six in 9th and Travis Umbel in 10th.
Full results will be posted on the GLSS site later this week. |

| ZIP IT! |

Matt Zea from Okauchee sets the example.
Instructors, remember to zip it up as you attend classes and regattas
this season. US Sailing certified instructors are required to wear PFDs
but what better way to teach your sailors. |
