ILYA YOUTH CHAMPS - PICKENS/CRAMER, ABISAMBRA AND PORTER WIN |
|
UW sailors Rob Pickens and Kelsey Cramer topped an 18-boat fleet
in this weekend's ILYA Youth Champs. Day Two brought three more races
in 15-18 mph conditions. Trapezes were in order which brought
excitement and some tipovers. Wisco sailors (above) beat U Minnesota
sailors Dave Elsmo and Jessica Haverstock. Wisco's Patty Schmidt/Becca
Stephensen were third. Wisco alum Scott Eisenhardt/Patrick Richards
claimed fourth and soon-to-be Eckerd College freshman sailed
with collegiate (Eckerd) nationals crew Lara Dallman-Weiss. Above are
pictured the winners with regatta chair Aaron Mann and Quantum bags.
The trophy is the Barkow Championship 420 award.
Purdue alum Carlos Abisambra repeated as the Laser Full Rig Champ.
Indiana's Mike Schmid was second. Patrick Doran, past X Inland Champ,
was third.
Wisco's Christine Porter (collegiate nationals singlehanded
participant) took the radial title with a final score for five races of
5. Robbie Johnson, past ILYA Opti Champ from LaBelle, was second,
Wheeler Morris of White Bear was third.
A Kate Goes Sportsmanship Medal was awarded to Geneva instructor,
Mike Kuschner. Mendota, like other SE WI lakes, is under a slow-no wake
policy and, hence, motorboats are scarce. Mike served as the sole
safety boat. He consistently checked in with the RC to offer assistance
and help was needed as the winds increased on Sunday. Mike is from St.
Mary's and attended this year's Collegiate Nationals.
Congrats to the Wisco sailing team for a great regatta with
Saturday night fireworks, lunches grilled by the lake and a youthful
feel to the entire event.

| E NATIONALS |
| |
With provisional results listed on the website, it appears Andy
Burdick won the 50th National E Championship amidst controversy. A
throwout shifted the final positions. Tom Burton remained in second and
Sam Rogers was third beating Augie Barkow for fourth. What a lofty set
of sailors. The competition was tough. For full results, click here. Look for a newsletter from Lon Schoor later today or check the National E site. |
| JEFF ANNIS IS MC MASTERS NATIONALS CHAMPS |
|
Jeff Annis maintained his lead on Sunday but Tim Fredman made his
move to second at event's end. Peter Tourmanoff, Rick Trester and Bill
Best rounded out the top five. See the MC website and click on the regattas tab on the lefthand menu. Ask to be added to the MC Sailing Association email list by contacting Ron Stryker. |
| COLIN SMITH IS THIRD AT YOUTH CHAMPS |
| | Our
Midwest sailors had a tough day yesterday as the California sailors
rose to the top. Gordon Lamphere is in 11th with Clifford Porter in
13th in the Full Rig. Louis Padnos is 6th, Steph Hudson 27th and Erik
Bowers 32nd in 420s; Annie Kate Haeger is 21st and Mitchell Kiss 31st.
Hope Monday and Tuesday bring our kids up in the standings. |

| E INVITATIONAL - ENJOY THE CASUAL COMFORT OF DELAVAN |
| E INVITE RETURNS TO DELAVAN AFTER 40+ YEARS
Delavan
Lake Yacht Club ("DLYC") is excited to be hosting the 2008 ILYA Class E
Invitational Regatta July 10-13, 2008. This is the first ILYA
sanctioned Class E regatta since the approval of the scantling rule
change to permit both asymmetrical and symmetrical spinnakers by the
National Class E Scow Association. The DLYC E Fleet was instrumental
in this change. DLYC President Tim O'Keefe can you tell you over a
cocktail how he sat down with the DLYC E Fleet in November 2001 with a
crude model of what has now has become the current asymmetrical Class E
Scow and convinced the DLYC E Fleet to take this flier. A lot has
happened with the DLYC E Fleet since the last ILYA Class E Invitational
in 1962.
We encourage everyone to come and participate in the great regatta
experience that DLYC has become known to provide. Over the past few
years, our members have been dedicated to improving our facilities, so
come see what has been done, especially of recent with the dining and
lounge areas. We also have WiFi capability for those that want to keep
connected with the real world.
We understand the cost of attending regattas, so we have
encouraged our members to open up their homes to you. Please contact
our housing coordinator (Richard Beers at www.richard.beers@gmail.com)
so that we can try to eliminate one of the most expensive components
(next to the boat) of attending a regatta.
We have planned a full schedule of social events to complement
the racing. The first event is Thursday, July 10, with a practice race
in the late afternoon followed by on-site registration and a welcoming
reception at the DLYC from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 pm. There will be a
variety of complimentary light hors d'oeuvres, soda and beer and a cash
bar for additional refreshments.
A complimentary continental breakfast will be available on
race day mornings at the DLYC beginning at 8:00 a.m. Lunch will be
available on all race days. On Friday evening, there will be DLYC's
famous Fish Fry followed by karaoke. Saturday evening will include a
steak dinner followed by a party with the band Dockside (which includes
DLYC members) at the DLYC. Single meal tickets and discount meal
packages will be available for purchase at registration. A cash bar
will be available throughout the afternoons and evenings at the DLYC
during the regatta.
At the present, we intended to dry sail the regatta. We
will have a number of moorings in for use during launch, lunch and
pullout so the boats do not have to be banging against one another on
the piers. Shuttle service will be provided.
Trophies will be awarded during lunch on Sunday.
See the
official Notice of Race on the ILYA website (www.ilya.org) for complete
information and lodging options. If you have any questions, please do
not hesitate to contact Regatta Co-chairs Mark and Connie Hetzler at
mwhetz@fitcheven.com or (773) 339-6321 (for Mark) or
connie_hetzler@quakeroats.com or (310) 663-3382 (for Connie).

| OLYMPIC-SIZED ALGAE PROBLEM |
| From Scuttlebutt and the Team Seven Report
The
hot topic in Qingdao is the proliferation of algae. Statistics showed
that as of Saturday the algae had affected a total sea area of 13,000
square kilometers, four hundred out of which was covered by the foreign
stuff. To make it worse, more than 32 percent, or 15.86 square
kilometers of the guarded sea area for Olympic sailing competition, was
also covered up. In order to assure the smooth going to the Olympic
sailing events, Qingdao had mobilized more than 10,000 labor forces and
over a thousand vessels to clean up the algae in the sea. Up till now
more than 100,000 tons of algae has been weeded out. Wang said besides
just cleaning, more methods, such as blocking the further inflow of the
algae, would also be adopted to accelerate the speed. -- Complete story . . . from Scuttlebutt
And from Team Seven
Qingdao, China
June 28, 2008
Qingdao
and the Olympic Sailing venue, already under the public spotlight for
fog, light winds and strong currents, now have another difficult
phenomenon to deal with. Actually, it's more like a roadblock. The talk
of the town is the blue green algae, seaweed bogs, monsters, islands,
or whatever you want to call them, that have taken over the coastline. For the complete story with photos.
