SAIL FOR THE GOLD GALA RAINS SUPREME |
|
Don't
let the calm beauty of a Pewaukee sunset deceive you. Mother Nature
wreaked havoc on the evening but she could not diminish the enthusiasm
of this crowd. The final count is still being determined but it looks
as though the two Olympic teams (Team Seven and the White Buffalo) will
share $75,000. The event was sponsored by RW Baird and Company and food
was provided by six local establishments. Both teams sold softgoods so
everyone brought something home.
The
real story was the near-tornado strength winds that ripped the party
preparations to shreds, dumped the proverbial Flood of Genesis on the
area and even today is problemmatic for those on Pewaukee. The lake
is a foot higher than the 100-year flood mark, piers and boats have
been removed due to the high water. There is virtually no boat left
on a lift around the lake.
Never
has there been a crowd so large and so flexible assembled under soggy
tents. Twelve tents were raised; none survived the entire evening. The
formal presentation concluded, dancing began and the last huge tent
fell. Barkow and Ruf thanked the crowd with great emotion, Gold
Medalists Buddy Melges and Bill Allen provided the humor and Baird
executive Mike Schroeder energized the crowd for a send off these two
teams will remember.
For a signed Olympic flag, Team Seven poster, note cards, T-shirt or hat, contact Leslie Barkow. (The Yngling team is already in China). For White Buffalo hat, pin or duffle, contact Sally Ruf (John is in Connecticut to Rhode Island to Kiel, Germany to Canadian Nationals to possibly Finland).
Thanks to all for a great night. |
| FREE REGISTRATION FOR NEW BOAT OWNERS |
|
If you bought a new boat from Melges, you are entitled to a free registration fee at Okoboji. Contact Andy Burdick to
arrange your free ride. There is no place better than Okoboji. It is a
family town and a great road trip. Or better yet, buy a new boat for
the Inlands.

| YOUTH CHAMPS FORMS |
|

The ILYA Laser and 420 Champs are the last weekend of June. With
fireworks, State St. restaurants, Union Terrace viewing for the
parents, how can you go wrong? The University of Wisconsin Sailing Team
and the Hoofers Sailing Club will be hosting the ILYA Youth Champs in
Madison, WI the weekend of June 28-29, 2008. Dorm room registration
has been sufficient to allow us to reserve rooms on the lakeshore. This
is the same site as last year, with so much of the same great fun:
- Fantastic competition of all ages from all across the Midwest (25 and under)
- Rhythm and Booms Festival all around Madison
- Three meals, including Friday evening social with the entire sailing club
- Great ILYA Race Committee
- Still only $30 for each sailor
But we've also added some new perks to make it more fun and easier to navigate in Madison.
- To ease space concerns at Hoofers, we'll be launching all Lasers from the Porter Boathouse (home to UW Rowing).
-
We're offering dorm housing for just $15/night in UW's Lakeshore Dorms
with only a 1 min walk from the Laser launching site and only 10 min
walk form Hoofers (Regatta HQ)
- There will be volunteers at
the Regatta HQ to help parents and solo sailors with loading and
unloading with valet parking in FREE lots for those who need it.
All regatta information can be found at the UW Sailing Team's website at www.uwsailingteam.org. There is extensive sailing, housing, and regatta information and an awesome map to help you navigate around Madison.
