| EASTER SAILING |
| Ecklund featured in STAR
Tune in to ESPN2 at 2:30pm this Easter Sunday 3/23/08 to see STAR in action during the Acura Key West Race Week!
STAR32
is one of the featured teams for the week with on-board cameras,
helicopter footage, and microphones. Gary Jobson (host of the show)
told me they had some great video of our team.
We had a great
week winning our class in this VERY competitive Melges32 sport boat
class. Look for the blue spinnaker with "Acura" printed in white
letters and our gold star on the side of the boat.
The next
television coverage will be April 13th at 12:30 on ESPN2. STAR finished
3rd in the Acura Miami Grand Prix held last week.
I hope you all tune in!

| OSHKOSH X CHAMPS - 2008 |
|
The
dates for this year's x Champs are Wednesday, July 23rd through
Saturday, July 26th. Oshkosh is in the midst of planning an Olympic
themed event, with "Opening Ceremonies" to be held after registration
closes Wednesday evening at the newly renovated, beautiful Waters
building on the lake. It will be a treat just to see the Waters,
believe me!
Chip
Mann and Tom Hodgson are PROs for the Sr. and Jr. fleets this year
and Oshkosh looks forward to hosting boats from around the ILYA to
compete on Winnebago.
Friday
night's big social will be a blast for everyone. The "Lake of
Champions" casual dinner, again at the Waters, will feature a fantastic
DJ leading "medal round" games and Karaoke afterwards.
Please encourage your families to book their rooms early-the
following week is EAA in Oshkosh and people come ahead, so rooms book
up fast. This cannot be stressed enough! Two blocks have been
reserved under ILYA at the Hilton Garden Inn (60 rooms at $109 per
night) and the Park Plaza Hotel (80 rooms at $85 per night). Please
see the Oshkosh website for details on accommodations www.oshkoshyachtclub.org.
Please contact me with any questions you may have-thank you.

| Board Names Gull Lake for 2009 |
|
Upon
recommendation of the X committee, the ILYA Board named Gull Lake as
the host of the 2009 X champs. Gull is known as a large, round lake
with plenty of fun in this resort region. E boaters are familiar with
the fine sailing area. X boaters can look forward to a "Road Trip"
regatta with loads of fun in a new site.
To view all the approved bids, check the ILYA site on the Regatta bid chart. To file a bid, simply contact Jim Smith at the ILYA office.
The ILYA Board awards regatta sites at both its Fall and Winter Board
meetings. Speak with your fleets to gain support for your lake. |

US SAILING Presents National Award for
Race Administration to Bill Bentsen
Newport, R.I. (March 15, 2008) - US SAILING, national governing body
for the sport, has announced it is presenting its Harman Hawkins Trophy
for excellence in Race Administration to Bill Bentsen (Chicago, Ill.).
US SAILING President Jim Capron and Race Administration Committee Chair
Dick Rose made the announcement earlier today at US SAILING's Spring
Meeting in Newport, Rhode Island. Unable to attend the US SAILING
meeting, Bentsen will officially be presented with the award at a later
date. Presented annually, US SAILING's Harman Hawkins Trophy is awarded
to an individual who has made outstanding contributions to the sport of
sailing in the field of race administration (judging, race management,
appeals and racing rules).
After an outstanding sailing career
capped by two Olympic medals, Bentsen has made significant
contributions in all areas of Race Administration. For more info check
the US Sailing website. |
| Olympics - Here We Come! |
| Barkow and Ruf Feted with Fundraiser
Pine,
Pewaukee and the ILYA will join forces June 7th to raise funds for the
final push for the Olympics. Both Barkow and Ruf are training this week
while a committee of ILYA sailors is gathering the finest auction items
for your excitement. Robert W. Baird, Co., has generously provided the
jumpstart to a successful event.
Pewaukee has generously donated the use of the clubhouse and the
volunteer manpower. The knowledge and expertise of Tim O'Malley
(Pewaukee) the Robles (Beulah), the Rolfs (Pine) Margaret Hollister
(Pine). and Kim Tornehl (Pewaukee) will be invaluable. But the real
asset is the generosity of the many ILYA members who have donated items
for the auction. For starters, the Ackley clan will provide a dinner
for 25 lucky winners, boat trips (Booze Cruises to finer dining) on
many of the I-94 lakes will go to the highest bidders, two airline
tickets with no black out dates anywhere in the Continental US
(compliments of Midwest Express), PACKERS tickets (no, you are not
sitting next to Brett Favre but next to the equally fascinating
O'Malleys).
You, too, can be part of this event. Everyone is invited - the
first 500 will receive tickets. The total ticket price will go toward
the Olympic campaigns due to the generosity of Baird and our many
donors. If you would like to donate an item, large or small; a service,
local or in our sailing area; money, any denomination, contact Dale or
Nancy Roble at lakebeulah@aol.com.
If you are near Pine or Pewaukee, contact the Barkows, Rufs, Tim
O'Malley or Julie Rolfs to provide an auction item. If you own a
business that manufactures any product, we are interested. Help send
our two Olympians to Qingdao with the best equipment and coaching
possible.
The ILYA Foundation
serves our many sailors who wish to participate in higher level events
and need financial support. The Foundation was established under the
ILYA's 501(c)(3) status and welcomes charitable donations. Please send
donations, (small as well as large) to ILYA Foundation, PO Box 311, Fontana, WI, 53125-0311. |

| Five Guys and a Burger |
| Delavan Sailors Flip the Burgers
For fun, a large burger and sailing
company, travel to Delafield, Wisconsin. Commodore Porter was surprised
in August to see many Delavan men sporting stylish shirts with a "Five
Guys" logo. While she thanked them for the support of ILYA X sailing,
the "Five Guys" concept was an unknown in Wisconsin. NOW - we all get
it. Especially those parents in Pewaukee who had youngsters clamoring
to get to the fastfood restaurant on opening day. The restaurant in
Delafield and Madison's State Street is owned an operated by our
Delavan sailors. The burgers are huge, the fries come in regular and
Cajun but the most interestind aspect was the sailing clientele who
frequent the Delafield shop. Porter saw three X boaters, C boat crews
and parents galore! Thanks, Delavan, for supporting our regattas.
For more opportunities like these, regatta chairs along with
Sharon Garber and Fletcher Driscoll, are firming up sponsorship for the
'08 and '09 regattas. In addition, advertising is now available on Scowlines. Contact Jim Smith for more details.
