| Report from Miami from Terry Bischoff |
|
For the 6th year, my team consisting of ILYA members Barb
Gamache, John Hanson, Jock Irvine, Charlie MacNider, and new this year,
John Mann have been running circles for US SAILING at the MOCR. This
year we did the Lasers and Radials. Many countries used the Radial
event as part of their Olympic selection process, as they know we give
them top notch RM performance. We have also done 2 Yngling NAs and 2
470 NAs either preceeding or directly after the OCR. To boot, the
Medal Race element has been in place for the last 3 years, and our team
has been selected each year to run that prestigious race. Not bad for
some flatlanders. The team is augmented with ROs from Milwaukee YC,
Chicago YC, Texas, and Florida.
Starting next Sunday, we will be doing the Yngling World
Championship. A tough challenge for our experienced crew, as there will
be the top 30 sailors from around the World. Sally has now
"theoritically" qualified as the Olympic entrant to the Olympic games,
since no other US boat has chosen to challenge her next week. She
looked "hot" yesterday as she came from behind to win the Medal Race at
the OCR. I think they are slowly peaking for their effort to win her
first WC.
90% of my OCR team will do the WC, as we add a few of the "usual
suspects" from other OCR teams who have worked with us in the past at
other Champs. At this level, running the races is very challenging.
We have eyes all over us as we do our thing, starts, changing marks,
finishes, etc., how we communicate on the radio so as not to show "any
prejudicial national favoritism". Not only are the competitors ready
to throw a "redress" at us if we make a slight error they feel has
prejudiced them (those rarely if ever succeed), but the International
Jury who does on water umpiring is always looking for something to
"improve" our style. Also, at all WCs, ISAF sends a Race Management
Consultant. This year a friend of mine from Canada, to make sure we
don't show any undo "Nationalism" on the starting line. Really!. There are two European countries, whose ROs are very reluctant to call their countrymen OCS. As if we wouldn't call a Pine boat OCS in an ILYA event! Look out!
While you chill out at the Winter ILYA next weekend, we will be doing the Yngling WC Medal Race in balmy Miami |
| Editor's Observations on Strictly Sail |
| New Boats Add Excitement, Show Dedication to One Design Concept
Youth boats were a hit this week as
both Melges and Laser Performance Sailboats showed exciting new
boats for the young set priced under $3000. Melges will serve as a
distributor of the BIC -- yes, the pen company. Designed like a
miniature 29er, the video of youth in FL showed the fun and
"tippability" of this entry. The factory rep demonstrated a 41 second
rigging process -- floor to rig beginning with all small, portable
parts for kids as young as 6 (Harry Melges has already sailed one.) For
a video display, click here.
Laser Performance Sailboats (formerly Vanguard)
displayed the 2008 Boat of the Year, the SB3, and also won the display
of the show award. Their new entry into the youth arena is called the
BUG and is a bit more conventional rig with hiking straps, simple
rigging and colorful display and graphics.
Both are plastic and excitingly shaped to modernize the entry into youth sailing.
Strictly Sail was full of our sailors: the I-20s were there with a
new orange I20 and Butterfly with flowery deck which can be customized
- eyecatching. Melges was center stage with a Melges 32 prominently at
the facility's height limit. MC, Melges 17 and all the team busy.
Harken was a hit with an industry award for a new rig tension measuring
device and a grinding contest which changed as more brutes came to test
the best. A Wisconsin sailor was on the leader board for Friday and
most of Saturday. Hedlund Marine and Laser Performance were at the
entrance with loads of ILYA young sailors manning the area which was
packed with traffic around the Gill display, kayaks and Hobies as well
as Laser products. The UW Madison Sailing Team returned for its 6th
year as support staff for the event. The team is hired by Strictly Sail
as a fundraiser for the team to provide extra help for many varying
booths and tasks. Quantum Sails had a booth.
The lasting impression is one of fresh, new shapes, cuts and
graphics with loads of technical gizmos to gain attention. The
competition for the sailing dollar is intense. New classes abound in
the field. One Design is king as a plethora of new faces join the
successful standards in sailing.
Lastly, hot off the presses is a US Sailing promotional video
featuring our own John Ruf and Sally Barkow. Come to the Winter Inland
to see them on video and other Olympians promoting the experience,
pride and hard work of competing in the Games. |

| Barkow Wins Medal Round
Both
Barkow and Ruf sat in 8th place at the end of regular competition. The
disabled sailors did not sail a medal round. Barkow took command of the
fleet to win the last race which counts double to end up an overall
6th. Check the website for more details. Please consider a donation
for both to continue to train at the level required for Olympic
contention. Click here for results
The ILYA Foundation
serves our many sailors who wish to participate in higher level events
and need financial support. The Foundation was established under the
ILYA's 501(c)(3) status and welcomes charitable donations. Please send
donations, (small as well as large) to ILYA Foundation, PO Box 311, Fontana, WI, 53125-0311.
