| SALLY REPEATS AS ROLEX SAILOR OF THE YEAR - Congratulations! |
|
Pine Lake's Sally Barkow returns
to the New York Yacht Club February 29th to regain possession of the
title "best yachtswoman in the US" for the second time in three years.
US Sailing carries the official press release but Barkow's words praise
the teamwork and team members who won this award along with her. Her
regular crew Carrie Howe and Debbie Capozzi return to the event along
with Sally after being named US Sailing's "best team" only a month ago.
Team Seven is currently in Miami practicing in preparation for the Miami Olympic Classes Regatta. For more on the Rolex, click here.
The MOCR begins January 27 and precedes the Yngling World's where
Barkow hopes finally to be named the US representative to the Olympics
in the Yngling Class. In addition, Barkow brings home a Rolex watch.

| DAVE PERRY ON RULES IN MILWAUKEE |
| | Saturday, February 16th
fom North U
"You can't play the game if you don't know the rules.
Whether
you are a new racer or a salty dog, the North U. Rules and Tactics
Seminar will send you home with a new understanding of the racing rules.
The
North U. Rules & Tactics Seminar teaches the rules and their
underlying principles. You'll see how the rules work and understand how
to resolve the conflicts and transitions between the rules as positions
change. We'll go all the way around the course, teaching the rules in
the way you use them - not by the numbers, but through situations on
each leg of the course. You will learn to recognize situations and
understand which rules apply.
But that is not all. The rules
shape and control tactics. The North U. Rules & Tactics Seminar
teaches how to position your boat to make use of the rules. You learn
positions that allow you to control the game, and how to avoid
positions that leave you vulnerable to attack. You'll also learn the
critical difference between right of way and control."
For more info, click here.
Dave was our keynote speaker at last year's Winter Inland. He is
knowledgeable but, most importantly, humorous and entertaining. He
explains it simply with a jovial twist. It will be a day of relaxed
learning. South Shore, one of the area's loveliest clubs hosts this
event. With fulltime staff, the amenities here are exceptional all
week. If you haven't visited South Shore, go enjoy Lake Michigan while
learning from the best. |
| USODA "Optinews" Sample |
| Join now
There
are many reasons to join USODA, not the least of which is the
five-time-per-year magazine just for Opti sailors. The magazine has
articles of interest for sailors, parents, coaches and program
organizers. The national class, USODA, controls measurment, provides
regatta management and scheduling, administers a training and national
team and encourages the best Optimist sailing everywhere in the nation.
For a sample of Optinews, click here.
It will take two minutes to download due to size but is worth the read.
Now is the time for clubs to consider including ILYA or national class
organization membership info in your annual dues collection. The
Optimist organization provides an incentive for club collection of
dues. Contact USODA for more information. |

| SWAP SHOP |
| Bring to Winter Inland
What to do with T-shirts? Rick Trester was the brainchild behind this new concept but I'm guessing MRS.
Trester wants storage space. Beth Wyman and the Oshkosh crew will have
ILYA Champs on hand. Trester has some MC Masters shirts left. Bring
your stash. Put a sale price on your merchandise and we will collect
money for you. This may be an "on your honor" system but Past Commodore
Reese has promised booth space.

| YOUTH MEETING |
| | NOT DURING PACKERS GAME
Sorry,
Vikings and Bears fans, we are not arranging the meeting for Sunday the
20th as had been discussed. Lake Beulah Yacht Club is the site. Time is
2:00. On the agenda are X and Opti issues but also the re-establishment
of a SHEETS-like organization. Any other issues are open for
discussion. Please plan to attend or email your comments to either.
The
Winter Inland is the site of information sharing. Pine has sent its
Quad Lakes and TRAP forms (SEE CALENDAR OF EVENTS above)for posting on
the ILYA website. Please think of preparing your NORs and bringing 100
copies to the Winter Inland. |
| WINTER INLAND PLEA FROM TREASURER |
| | Sponsorship Opportunity
The
ILYA Winter Inland is coming up. This is the event where the
Association offers more educational and networking opportunities to its
members that at any other time of the year. This is when we plan and
create all the summer activities we all enjoy. We offer fleet meetings
for all of our classes, sessions on junior and youth sailing, race
officer training, and go fast sessions. We have scheduled opportunities
for our local clubs to learn how to grow and be more successful. We
have our annual delegates meeting and, of course, our lunch with a
renown speaker and, this year, six deserving sailors will be inducted
into the ILYA Hall of Fame.
The
ILYA wants to continue to offer these types of programs to our
membership. Our challenge is that the $30.00 fee for this event only
covers about 50% of the cost of this event. We presently have one
anonymous donor to help defray some of the additional costs of this
event. We need more help! If you would like to become a sponsor of the
Winter Inland please contact Jim Smith at scowslants@aol.com or 262-203-7721.
