OLYMPIA RESORT IN OCONOMOWOC
Joni Palmer and Dean Brenner join
us as selected speakers. Joni has visited the ILYA region many times
before. She will start us off on Friday night's youth discussion. Joni
brings nearly 30 years of experience with many clubs and boats. She is
a past executive director of USODA, champion sailor, consultant for US
Sailing. The evening belongs to you. Her expertise is broad and you
will select the discussion points. Joni will be available for 1:1
discussion if your sailing school has a particular problem to solve.
All sailing school directors are welcome and would benefit.
Dean
Brenner heads the US Olympic Committee and this is the year to get
excited and learn all the facts. With two ILYA sailors representing the
US, we are proud and eager to hear what the US provides and how it all
works. Dean will arrive on Friday but is scheduled for the Saturday
sessions.
Before listing
the Saturday sessions, suffice it to say past commodore Reese has
secured a spot for gathering on both Friday and Saturday nights.
Bring your Non sailors: YC Board members
This
year your non-sailing yacht club member will find interest in the
topics of shoreland management (which is a re-gathering of last year's
popular discussion) and bar management. Capitol Husting will come to
talk about products and profits. We are still contacting the Tavern
League of WI to obtain a speaker on the legal aspects of running a
volunteer bar which most of you do. The feature of the
morning will be Dean Brenner who will speak on his particular area of
expertise which is running businesses. His topic is long range planning
for yacht clubs, avoiding conflict and achieving or setting goals. The intracacies of the Olympics should appeal to all so Dean Brenner will be part of the non-sailing track in the afternoon.
Sailors
Official fleet meetings are scheduled for Saturday morning. The first flight of meetings begins at 9:00: C, E, Melges 17, I-20 and A Open. The second round of meetings commences at 10:30 for MCs, Ms, A One Design and the NCSSA C meeting which
is held annually. The agendas will be printed in Scowslants but contact
your fleet rep to add items to the discussion area. Recall the Rules
Committee meets the week prior to the Board (to expedite discussion at
the Board but also to allow time for investigation before the Board
meeting) so forward rules-related issues immediately to your fleet rep.
Melges is the selected speaker this year so join them in the afternoon.
Luncheon
This
year marks a return of the Bilge Pullers Hall of Fame. Our coveted
Pillbury, Ed Malone and Club and Member of the Year awards will
highlight the presentation. Dean Brenner will give us a short preview
of the Olympics to whet your appetite.
Fee and Hotel
A
$30 fee will be collected at registration. The fee can be prepaid at
the office. Call Jim at the numbers listed below - note change - fax,
email or send the form in Scowslants or linked here.
The $30 fee offsets lunch but assists in paying the two
nationally-known speakers. Donations for the honoraria have been
accepted in the past. If you are interested in supporting the Winter
Inland, contact Jim Smith.
Olympia is holding rooms at a special rate of $99 so call 262-369-4999
or 800-558-9573 to reserve now. The ski hill, nearby shopping at
Johnson Creek Outlet Mall and downtown Oconomowoc provide entertainment
for the family. The Milwaukee Art Museum is 30 minutes east and five
minutes from the Betty Brunn Children's Museum. |

E Fleet Votes to Unite Around Asymmetrical
United
region by region the National E Class overwhelmingly supported a move
in 2008 to move to the asymmetrical configuration. The ILYA region
comprises 40% of the organization but all four regions voted to accept
the return to a September date for Nationals, a 2008 implementation
date for the asymmetricals. 115 ILYA members voted for the changes. For
more info, consult the E National Class website.
Save the date for the E National championship regatta. |

|
(Barkow with a Rolex rep far left, Barkow, Debbie Capozzi far right. Missing is regular Team Seven crew Carrie Howe)
from US Sailing
Skipper Sally Barkow and crew Debbie Capozzi and Carrie Howe are familiar faces in the winner's
circle of the USOC Team of the Year award: this team competing in the
Yngling won this award in 2005, and their outstanding performance in
2007 earns them the title for the second time. These three women have
consistently outperformed their peers at class events in 2007 to prove
themselves to be a powerhouse team in this keelboat fleet. Their
selection for this award is based on gold and silver medal performances
at both national and international events in the Yngling class. Gold
medal performances in 2007 included a class win at US SAILING Rolex
Miami OCR and the 2007 Princess Sofia Regatta in Palma de Mallorca,
Spain; the team brought home silver medals from the 2007 ISAF Sailing
World Championships in Cascais (Portugal), the 2007 Semaine Olympique
Française in Hyères (France), and the Yngling North American
Championship in Miami (Florida). This team has been named to the US
Sailing Team every year since 2003. To read US Sailing press release, click here. |

| ORANGE BOWL |
| Beulah's Colin Smith Second; Chicago's Johnstone is 1st in Opti White
Miami
is becoming a popular vacation spot for Christmas for many Midwest
sailors. The annual Orange Bowl event is traditionally one of the
largest events in the world for youth sailing. It features Opti Green
to Full Rig laser with choices in between. Full results are on the website but
several of our sailors in the Midwest placed in the top ten. Full rig
lasers saw Colin Smith (jointly of Lauderdale) take second with
Minnetonka's Erik Bowers in 9th. Macatawa's Louis Padnos with B.
Spector was 7th in 420s. Clay Danly of Chicago and Malcolm Lamphere of
Geneva were 7th and 10th respectively in the Opti Blue Fleet. Ford
Johnstone of Chicago and Tommy (T$) Garber of Minnetonka were 1st and
5th respectively. (Editor's note: "T money" is a nickname for this tough, young competitor) |
