BENTSEN WINS ISAF AWARD
|

The International Sailing Federation (ISAF) announced today that in 2009 the ISAF Beppe Croce Trophy - which honours an outstanding voluntary contribution to the sport of sailing - has been awarded to rules expert Bill Bentsen (USA).ISAF President Göran Petersson will present the award on Thursday 12 November at the 2009 ISAF Annual Conference in Busan, Korea. Bentsen's record of service to the International Sailing Federation includes membership on its Racing Rules Committee for 25 years until 2004, at which time he was Vice-Chairman of the committee. He chaired the Racing Rules Committee's first Race Management Sub-committee, which introduced the new Sailing Instructions Guide, now Appendix L of The Racing Rules of Sailing, and worked with Göran Petersson and Bryan Willis to draft the first ISAF Call Book for Match Racing (1992).

As a member of the Racing Rules Committee Working Party when chaired by Mary Pera, Bentsen spearheaded the major simplification and general revision of the Racing Rules that became The Racing Rules of Sailing for 1997-2001. Later he became chairman of the Working Party. Most recently, he was a member of the Racing Rules Committee's Case Book Working Party. In 2004, he received an ISAF Long Service Gold Medal. As an ISAF International Judge, Bentsen has been a member of international juries for the world or continental championships of many international classes, two ISAF Youth World Championships, the 1979 Pan American Games Regatta, and the 1988 Olympic Regatta. UW alum or supporters, please consider a donation, large or small, to the UW Sailing Team for the 2010 Collegiate Nationals. Terry Kohler, of North Sails, has offered to match the first $5000 for the event. The caveat is the funds need to be raised this year. If your club has generously offered to fundraise for a sail to complete the mandatory 18, please consider collecting your pledges to allow the team to take advantage of the Kohler offer. It's as though your donation counts double. What a great start to the fundraising required to host the Collegiate Nationals in May-June. Click here for the NOR for this weekend's Team Trial Qualifier. Enjoy the Milwaukee skyline and stay at one of the area's hotels while joining Opti sailors from around the area trying to qualify for the Team Trials in 2010. Two of the sailors to watch will be Geneva's Malcolm Lamphere and Minnetonka's Ben Garber who have been sailing at the top of the fleet this past summer. Other local sailors will compete this weekend.

| While we may be winding down in the Midwest, the college scene is just winding to its highpoint in the Fall Season. We have one past national champ, Annie Haeger, winning Co-ed regattas and another sailor, Steph Roble, on the #1 ranked Women's team. We have an entire Wisconsin team working to prepare for the Spring national championship. Many sailors are attending qualifying events for the Singlehanded Nationals in early November in Corpus Christi;others have qualified for the Sloops Nationals (Wisco team of Porter, Morley, McMinn and Stilin) at Coast Guard. We have at least two sailors serving as coaches - Daniel Thompson at Hobart and William Smith and John Porter at the Merchant Marine Academy. There are obvious omissions here, unintentional.
Look to collegesailing.org for the latest news. We have an increasing number of sailors who participate in college which bodes well for the future of scow sailing in the Midwest.
Go to the Old Dominion, Boston College site or the college athletic site for info on your favorite team.

Great competition in summer weather -- 39 Sailors from across Wisconsin competed in the 21st Annual MC Fall Classic regatta at North Lake on September 19 and 20. Warm, sunny weather brought shifty summer breezes to the fleet over the two day event. The wind made for challenging conditions for the sailors and the Race Officers. Both days the wind was from the East, Northeast or Southeast. The challenge was figuring which of these directions it would be at the start of each race.
Race one saw the fleet take off from the favored windward end of the line and only make a few tacks on the leg. The top five boats managed to get around the windward mark and offset cleanly. The rest of the fleet sat at the windward mark waiting for the wind to fill back in. Newcomer to MC regatta's, Rich Lorenz, lead at the first mark and extended his lead throughout the race.
Race two brought similar conditions with Rick Trester leading at every mark.
Race three saw the wind continue to clock to the southeast with Andy Gehl and Bruce Gallagher breaking away to finish first and second. At the end of the first day Bruce and Andy were first and second with a couple of points lead over a large group.
Sunday morning we sailed two back to back and on this day being at the leward end of the starting line paid in both races. Greg Simon, from Mendota, showed us all the way by winning both races. Bruce and Andy stayed close in both of those races to end up first and second. The rest of the top five were Rick Trester, Todd Faulkner and Craig Thompson.
In the Masters category Rob Ritter of Okauchee took first, Dave Abbott of Pewaukee second, and Peter Toumanoff also from Pewaukee third. Other awards included: First Grand Master: Ken Strasburg from North Lake, First Mega Master: Desmond Johnson from Lauterdale Lakes, and Top Woman sailor: Michele Heinze from Nagawicka.
Althought the wind was a challenge North lake put on a great event. From two lunches the many homemade salads, great tacos and a breakfast apple kuchen to die for to free soda and beer all weekend. The racing started on Friday afternoon in light and variable conditions. Finding the wind was key and taking advantage of the shifts made tactics very challenging for the entire fleet.
Saturday morning looked promising with winds around 8 and fairly steady. As race time approached, the winds lightened up a bit, although there were some puffs to be found in the 10 mph range. Staying in the pressure proved to be the key, although the irregular lake chop tested the sailors' ability to read the water. At the end of the 3rd race on Saturday, and the 5th race for the regatta, 1st and 2nd were locked up but the battle for 3rd through 5th involved the top half of the fleet.
Saturday evening's dinner will be remembered with tenderloin, pasta salad, baked potatoes, beans, fruit, with ice cream and brownies for dessert. The volunteers at the Lake Wawasee Yacht Club sure know how to host a dinner! The evening social had a great atmosphere with a fire in the fireplace at the club house and lots of talk about sailing all sorts of scows.
As sailors took to the water on Sunday morning, the winds looked steady, but like Saturday, they started to swing a bit. Some of the conditions can be attributed to the shape of the lake, and the local knowledge paid off as two Wawasee boats went 1, 2 to finish the regatta.
In great form, the boats were packed up, awards were presented, lunch was served, and sailors were on the road around 1:00 for the trip home. Enough can't be said for the excellent organization.
