| Wyman Purchases Oshkosh Legion |
|
OYC Gains Permanent Home
While
the Inland Champs were occurring in August, Bill Wyman was in
negotiations to obtain permanent space for the sailing enthusiasts and
supporters of Oshkosh. The once-majestic Legion Hall will return to its
prior place of shoreline eminence under the guidance of Wyman. The
American Legion post voted in September to allow Wyman to purchase the
building and in October local papers announced the completion of the
transaction. Wyman will assure a home for the Oshkosh Yacht Club who
has been annuallly renewing a rental agreement for mooring of boats and
social use of the facility. Oshkosh Sailing School will now obtain
classroom space and guaranteed space for instructional and member
boats.
Beth Wyman has been instrumental in building the local X fleet
from 3 to over 15 by encouraging new local youth and tapping strong
sailing families. The OYC has sponsored the Xtreme regatta the past
three years in preparation for the Inland X champs in Oshkosh next
year.
The addition of the Legion for permanent OYC use will further
strengthen the strong sailing traditions of Oshkosh. The building
itself is a 1903 structure built by William Waters in the Georgian
style. Over the years, ease of maintenance materials have been added
which have detracted from the building's original beauty. Wyman has
been applauded in many reviews for his civic contributions to the
community of Oshkosh. Click here for Northwestern article or here. |
| Oshkosh Announces X Champs Theme |
|
Youth who attend the ILYA X Champs at Oshkosh
will enter the competition area with an Opening Ceremony. The X Champs
coincide with the Olympic games in Qingdao where we hope to crown two
gold medalists. Our youth fleets will have an opportunity to display
club pride as they compete in an Olympic Games-themed event. So, local
sailing schools, get ready to display your talent off the water and on.
Burgees, team clothing or other creative means to display your club's
identity will be showcased at this event.
The event will be held in July due to the EAA Fly-In scheduled in August. Hotel rooms have been reserved by the Oshkosh chair, Amy Sitter. |
