| DAY TWO - ILYA X CHAMPS - FOUR HEAVY RACES |
|
THIS SAYS IT ALL ON RACE DAY #2
BIG WIND, WHITE CAPS, ROLLING WATER
REPORT BY NANCY DREISSEN
X Inland participants woke up to a gorgeous morning at Gull Lake with the forecast of light to moderate winds for the day. But as the first race started, the winds began building and were approximately 15-20 mph from the northwest throughout the morning. During the second race of the morning, wind gusts surprised the X boaters, especially in the senior fleet, which was sailing in the windier northern section of the lake. Several senior fleet boats tipped as they tried to complete a W2 ½ . Safety boats, coaches and spectators were on the spot to lend a hand. The junior fleet's course, also a W2 ½, was shorter and less gusty. The winds kept gradually dropping for the two afternoon races. Both fleets completed one W2 ½ and one W2.

| Optimist Nationals |

Cabrillo Beach, CA
Results are a day behind but we have news Malcolm Lamphere is in second this morning.
"Whitecaps? Wonderful. A wet little boat? No problem. Axel Sly just kept bailing with a bucket---standard equipment on Optimist dinghies---as he sailed into first place in the US Optimist National Championships Friday with two comfortable first places and a second in three races. Sly, 15, from Weston, Fla., started Day 2 of the four-day schedule a point behind defending champion Christopher Williford and now leads the regatta hosted by the Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club with 9 points to 12 for Malcolm Lamphere, 13, of Lake Forest, Ill. Williford, 14, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., is third with 17."
There are 171 entries in the separate Purple and Yellow fleets, which have separate starts but are scored together. They'll continue that format Saturday, and then on Sunday the top 80 boats will sail for the championship in the Gold-Silver fleet while non-qualifiers compete in the Bronze-Pearl group. The 40th-place boat in the top fleet will win the Silver title.
