Minnesota Hosts Inaugural X Invitational

 The inaugural MYC X Invitational Regatta just concluded on Lake Minnetonka. X boat sailors from Lake Minnetonka, White Bear Lake, Clear Lake and Gull Lake participated in the event. The regatta featured 4 of the top 8 finishers in the 2008 X Jr. Fleet Inland. The regatta was run out of the Ferguson house in Cottagewood and races were run in tandem with MYC's regularly scheduled races. A five race series was planned. Race One, a W2, started in a WNW wind at 6-8 mph, with Johnny Ferguson/Woody Hust (M-68) winning the start, Sam/Nash Chute (M-2) leading at the first two marks and the team of Addy Ferguson/Hayley Jewett (M-67) passing Eddie/Kate Cox (W-66) within three boat lengths of the downwind finish to get the gun. Chute held on to third and J. Ferguson was fourth. In Race Two, a W 1 ½, J. Ferguson was leading half way up the final windward leg in a fading breeze, Charlie Burton/Max Bernstein (M-9) gained some leverage to the left, grabbed a nice left hander and sailed to victory. Addy Ferguson milked the breeze for all it was worth and climbed into second and Eddie Cox fought to a third with Cole/Connor Lee, sailing W-42, in fourth. Boats headed to the Ferguson house for a picnic lunch and swimming. By afternoon and Race Three (W 1 ½), the Rodney Dangerfield's on the lake were out in force and the wind had faded further. Soon after the start Lee spotted some breeze on the right and rode it to a commanding lead by the top mark. However, no lead was safe in this pulsing wind; on for 10 minutes, off for 10 minutes. The leaders rounded the final leeward mark and were baited by a teaser in the middle of the course. Emily Oltrogge/Chrissy Tesar (Z-23) and Alex Driessen/Hunter Johnstone (GL-6) rounded the leeward mark and it was a race to the breeze on the right. Oltrogge got there first and won the race, Alex was second and the Willy Crary/Rosie Hust team, sailing W-7, was third. Race Four was abandoned. Sailors and support teams then headed to the Ekholm house for more swimming, food and beverage and an exceptional one hour video de-briefing conducted by Gordy Bowers on the big screen. After Day One it was M-67, GL-6, W-66 and M-2 with one more race on Sunday. The breeze on Sunday was 7-9 mph from the ESE with gray skies and flat water. In a very competitive and lead changing race Burton was back in the winners circle, beating Cox by a boat length at the finish, A. Ferguson was a very close third and J. Ferguson lee-bowed Driessen at the finish for a 4th.
 The Top five places in the final standings were:
1. M-67 Addy Ferguson/Hayley Jewett 11pts
2. W-66 Eddie Cox/Kate Cox 18 pts
3. GL-6 Alex Driessen/Hunter Johnstone 19 pts
4. M-9 Charlie Burton/Max Bernstein 20 pts
5. Z-23 Emily Oltrogge/Chrissy Tesar 26 pts

| MORNING LIGHT SHOWING IN FONTANA |

The Big Foot recreation district(Walworth/Fontana School District) is promoting the Big Foot and Badger High School Sailing team this weekend with a showing of Disney's "Morning Light" movie. The film chronicles a group of 18-20 year olds that were given the opportunity to train and race in one of the premier open ocean race in the world aboard Roy Disney's 70 foot racer, "Morning Light".
The cost of admission is $1 so plan on bringing the entire family for a fun night out. All proceeds will go to benefit high school sailing team.

Hans Dickel and his Minnetonka crew have been busy preparing the best dressed regatta in recent history - OK, this week! But isn't he the best-dressed yachtsman you know? So be assured his selection for the ILYA Melges championships will gain you stature at your local club.
"We need to have our orders in by July 1 to make sure the soft goods are available for pickup at the regatta. There is about a week left. We have some nice stuff for purchase, including polo shirts, wicking short sleeve and long sleeve shirts, hats, and duffle bags. There are many color options and sizes. Most items can also optionally include sail numbers. In addition, the pre-ordered meal discounts expire on July 5. Both of these items can be purchased here," reports Dickel.
