SAIL FOR THE GOLD GALA THIS WEEKEND

Reservations are closed but for those of you attending Saturday's event, Pewaukee, Pine and the ILYA have a glorious night planned. The Sail for the Gold Auction features a week's stay at Crested Butte donated by the Gallaghers or a weekend stay in Door Country donated by the Brumders plus a round of golf at Bristlecones Pine, Blue Mound Country Club, Merrill Hills and Westmoor Country Club. There is sailing apparel galore. Visit the Olympic Store for Harkenware, posters of Team Seven, White Buffalo paraphernalia and Olympic flags.

| US SAILING PROPOSES MANDATORY DUES |
|
 US Sailing has proposed a mandatory dues plan which would take effect with the new rules book in 2009. Jim Capron, US Sailing president, explains the new move in an editorial in Scuttlebutt. Here is the opening statement. The complete editorial is linked here.
"There has been a lot of discussion in recent days about a possible new requirement for active racing sailors to join US SAILING. The requirement would be a new US SAILING Prescription to the 2009-2012 Racing Rules of Sailing. In essence, the rule would require skippers and anyone steering the boat to be members of US SAILING, but only in races above a certain level. It is NOT our intention to require beginning sailors to be members, nor is it our intention to have this rule apply to racing at local clubs or sailing centers open primarily to their sailors.
"Over the next few months, we will be working on the proposed membership rule and the programs needed to make it easy to comply. The Board of Directors will decide on all 2009 US SAILING Prescriptions in June 2008, including the one that will require most racing sailors, at least those driving and those in charge, to join US SAILING in growing the sport."
A letter from the ILYA was sent to US Sailing registering our support of the organization and its many benefits but our LACK OF SUPPORT FOR MANDATORY DUES. It has been ILYA policy to deny collection of dues for national classes by the ILYA although we encourage all sailors to support the organizing groups and, in particular, US Sailing. US Sailing finances the rules book revision each quadrennium. A copy of the ILYA letter to US Sailing was sent to all member club delegates for those of you who desire to register comments to US Sailing.

| YOUTH CHAMPS FORMS |
|
 The ILYA Laser and 420 Champs are the last weekend of June. With fireworks, State St. restaurants, Union Terrace viewing for the parents, how can you go wrong? The University of Wisconsin Sailing Team and the Hoofers Sailing Club will be hosting the ILYA Youth Champs in Madison, WI the weekend of June 28-29, 2008. Dorm room registration has been sufficient to allow us to reserve rooms on the lakeshore. This is the same site as last year, with so much of the same great fun:
- Fantastic competition of all ages from all across the Midwest (25 and under)
- Rhythm and Booms Festival all around Madison
- Three meals, including Friday evening social with the entire sailing club
- Great ILYA Race Committee
- Still only $30 for each sailor
But we've also added some new perks to make it more fun and easier to navigate in Madison.
- To ease space concerns at Hoofers, we'll be launching all Lasers from the Porter Boathouse (home to UW Rowing).
- We're offering dorm housing for just $15/night in UW's Lakeshore Dorms with only a 1 min walk from the Laser launching site and only 10 min walk form Hoofers (Regatta HQ)
- There will be volunteers at the Regatta HQ to help parents and solo sailors with loading and unloading with valet parking in FREE lots for those who need it.
All regatta information can be found at the UW Sailing Team's website at www.uwsailingteam.org. There is extensive sailing, housing, and regatta information and an awesome map to help you navigate around Madison.

| Women's match racing event

Team 7 Sailing took a break from Olympic competition and won the 2008 Boat U.S. Santa Maria Cup. British sailor and close friend, Annie Lush, joined us this week to round out the crew. We were quite excited to compete in a match-race regatta that would sharpen our boat-on-boat skills, further develop our teamwork and onboard communications - all key elements to doing well at the up coming Olympic regatta. It was really nice showing up to a regatta where the boats are provided, rigged and ready, and we just hop in and go racing! Nothing like the Yngling program where we spend more time setting up / breaking down and working on the boat than we do racing. For more info, check the Team Seven website.

| COLLEGES COMPETE AT NATIONALS |

 Women's and Team Racing have concluded with Boston College taking both titles. Next year they gain our own Annie Kate Haeger so they seem poised to be a dynasty . Coed's began Monday and conclude Wednesday. Coeds culminate the ten-day event. For more information, go to collegesailing.org and look for the ILYA names of our talented sailors.
Above is Wisconsin skipper Patti Schmidt with crew Becca Steffenson. Patti completed the Women's A Division in 10th and currently sits as the only female skipper in co-eds in 8th in the B Division.

Geneva Hosts Event
Please join us for the USODA Midwest Championship and GLSS DinghyFest at Lake Geneva Yacht Club from July 9-11 (Wednesday - Friday). NOR and registration information is available at the GLSS website.
The schedule allows you to experience three great days of sailing on Lake Geneva or just come for the USODA Championship after attending the Kaszube Cup in Milwaukee. In addition to great racing the event will feature:
·Thursday night dinner and commentary with Olympic and America's Cup Champion Buddy Melges (free to registered competitors)
·Three day Green Fleet Clinic and Regatta with nationally acclaimed coach, Tom Coleman.
·The only local opportunity to qualify for the USODA Team Trials in Noroton, CT next spring

The Level I and II US Sailing Certification Courses are full but check the US Sailing website under education to find other courses offered. Remember only those 18 can be certified. No one under 16 will be allowed to attend. Those who attend the course at 16 must wait until age 18 to receive certification. A valid CPR and First Aid certification must be maintained to remain or obtain certification. In addition, a boater safety course must be passed prior to attending the course. Those are offered online.
